Regardless of the size of theinstitution or the level of competition, the core values cited in the athletic missionstatements of institutions as diverse as Ohio Wesleyan University and The Ohio StateUniversity are remarkably consistent. These core values are easily stripped into threebasic principles: an almost-unanimous endorsement of the pursuit of excellence in allthings, including athletics; universal identification of athletics as an integral part of theeducational mission of the institution and citation of the intrinsic value to each of theparticipants, including personal and social maturation, the education of the whole person,the development of a healthy lifestyle and learning the value of the pursuit of goalsin a collective context; and identification of athletics as one of the best ways to developand foster a sense of community. The universal benefits of athletics are conferred alikeon the quarterback at Ohio State playing in front of 100,000 spectators and the OhioWesleyan field hockey player playing in front of a small weekday crowd.Bishop records23
