2008-09 BISHOP OUTLOOK2With 10 letterwinners gone fromlast year’s 18-8 team, it might be temptingfor pundits to pencil the 2008-09 OhioWesleyan women’s basketball team intothe second division of the North CoastAthletic Conference standings. But with a returning letterwinner ateach of the five positions, as well as a talentedgroup of newcomers, it would notbe a surprise if head coach Nan Carney-DeBord and the Battling Bishops bouncedback right into the NCAC title chase.Sophomore Kayla Gordon, a secondteamAll-NCAC selection last season, andsenior Katie Hamilton are the returningpost players.Gordon averaged 10.6 points pergame and shared NCAC Newcomer ofthe Year honors in 2007-08. She ranked17th in the conference in scoring andfourth in field goal percentage (.502) andwas second on the team in reboundingwith an average of 3.9 per game. Gordonalso showed she can score from outside, ranking third on the team in 3-point fieldgoals.Hamilton averaged 5.2 points and2.5 rebounds in 14 minutes per game inthe Bishop post rotation last year.“Hamilton is playing like a senior, anticipating rebounds and providinggreat defense,” Carney-DeBord said. “Gordonhas incredible offensive moves andcan shoot from outside, but what makesher an outstanding player is that sheplays defense.”Sophomore Kaylie Titus, whoshowed flashes of brilliance in 3 gamesbefore suffering a season-ending kneeinjury, also returns. Titus also will seetime at a wing position this season.Freshman post Dany Finck, an allleagueselection in high school, will get achance to contribute immediately.Sophomore Tyler Cordell and juniorRachel Seibel return at the wing spots. The versatile Cordell showed promiseboth as a scorer and as a playmakerlast year, averaging 5.3 points and 2.5assists per game. She ranked 10th in theNCAC in assists.Seibel, an all-state selection in highschool who did not play basketball as afreshman, earned a spot in the rotationand increased playing team as theseason progressed.“The experience they gained lastyear is showing right now,” Carney-DeBord said. “They worked very hardover the summer and are extremely fitand strong.”Freshman Lea Mackenbach, whowon all-district and all-league laurels inhigh school, should make an immediateimpact. Freshman Lisa Wall, a first-teamall-conference selection in high school, will be heard from, and classmatesChristina Fesz, an all-conference pick inhigh school, and Maria Khoury, an allcountynominee in high school, also lookto contribute.Running the show will be sophomoreguard Pam Quigney. Quigney averaged7.9 points per game and displayedexpert marksmanship, ranking fifthin the conference in 3-point field goalpercentage (.425). Her overall field goalpercentage of .480 would have rankedsixth in the league had she made enoughbaskets to qualify for the statistical title.“Quigney has improved so much,”Carney-DeBord said. “Her strength, speedand acceleration are incredible.”Junior guard Lauren Gentene, whocontributed 2.1 points per game in areserve role last season, and sophomoreChardae Spencer also return.Newcomers who could contributeare sophomore Hannah Coughlin, whodid not play last season; freshman ShannonDelaney; freshman guard LindaStover, who led the district in scoringand was a second-team all-district selectionin high school; and freshman guardElyse Wenger.Kayla Gordon2008 09 OWU Women’s BasketballOhio Wesleyan opens the seasonat the Anderson Tip-Off Tournament, featuring a field that also includes St.Mary’s (Ind.) and Robert Morris (Ill.). Regardless of the size of the institutionor the level of competition, the core values cited in the athletic mission statements ofinstitutions as diverse as Ohio Wesleyan University and The Ohio State University are remarkablyconsistent. These core values are easily stripped into three basic principles: analmost-unanimous endorsement of the pursuit of excellence in all things, including athletics;universal identification of athletics as an integral part of the educational missionof the institution and citation of the intrinsic value to each of the participants, includingpersonal and social maturation, the education of the whole person, the development of ahealthy lifestyle and learning the value of the pursuit of goals in a collective context; andidentification of athletics as one of the best ways to develop and foster a sense of community. The universal benefits of athletics are conferred alike on the quarterback at OhioState playing in front of 100,000 spectators and the Ohio Wesleyan field hockey playerplaying in front of a small weekday crowd.29

Wesleyan intercollegiate athletics is the enthusiasticsupport from the Alumni “W” Association, a group of 4500 alumni letterwinners worldwide. The goals of the Alumni “W” Association are to improve communications with alumniathletes, improve the current athletic program and raise funds to support annual operationsof the current athletic program. Through the efforts of this group, individual team alumnigatherings are held yearly, such as a men’s soccer golf outing and alumni game to celebrate50 years of men’s soccer at OWU. Also, using e-mail, OWU keeps alumni informed aboutthe current teams’ activities and upcoming events. Each of OWU’s 22 varsity teams hasa corresponding alumni group called the Committee for Excellence. These groups haveprograms to support the current coaches’ needs, mostly recruiting assistance. Another itemis the annual Dale J. Bruce Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner, at which time the University’stop scholar-athletes are honored. Through Team OWU, the principal athletic fundraisingprogram, and other special events, the Alumni “W” Association raises about $140,000annually. We know of no other Division III university which raises as much money annuallyto support its athletic programs.33

Remembering Mr. Rickey CAMPAIGNOhio Wesleyan University is well into its first-evercampaign directed at fulfilling the needs of the University’sathletic and recreation programs as well as the physicaleducation department.Named “Remembering Mr. Rickey,” the campaign willhave a profound impact on all aspects of Ohio Wesleyanathletics. The campaign was announced at Ohio Wesleyan’sCommencement in 2004, the 100th anniversary of Rickey’sgraduation from Ohio Wesleyan. At that event, Rickey’sgrandson, Branch Rickey III ’67, and Jackie Robinson’s daughter,Sharon, together addressed the graduating seniors. As of July, 2008, campaign fundraising had approached$15 million and portions of the vision have become reality.Margaret Sagan Field, the new home of the Ohio Wesleyansoftball team, brings the Bishops back on campus forthe first time since softball was reinstated as a varsity sportin 2000. Along with Margaret Sagan Field, a new press box atadjacent Littick Field was constructed during the fall of 2007.At Selby Field, an OmniGrass artificial playing surfacehas been installed, the George Gauthier Track has beenrebuilt with an Ameritan FP surface, and the fence surroundingthe south end of the field has been rebuilt. In Edwards Gym, repairs to the skylight and roof werecompleted during the summer of 2007, and a new floor inthe weight room will be installed in 2008.The Phil & Nancy Meek Aquatics and Recreation Centeris in the final stages of design and groundbreaking is plannedfor May, 2009. Tying the facilities together will be the ArthurR. Belt Gateway, or “Beltway,” a concept that will bridge thenorth and south athletics areas. This gateway will featuregreen space and be integrated with the city of Delaware’supcoming bike path projects.Enhancements to existing facilities are a significant por-tion of the campaignas well. Major enhancements(subjectto further fundraising)include:• Gordon FieldHouse will receive anew floor, new lightingand new netting, and the roof will bereplaced during thefall of 2008. GordonField House, as well asthe adjacent BranchRickey Arena, also willreceive a brightenedinterior.• Selby Field will receive a refurbishing of the pressbox, and the field will be lighted to provide additional opportunitiesfor intramural and recreational use.• Edwards Gym, which celebrated its centennial duringthe campaign, will undergo extensive remodeling toinclude more offices and classrooms, as well as new lockerrooms and conference areas. The gym’s second-floor court,Ohio Wesleyan’s original venue for intercollegiate basketball, will be resurfaced and renovated to allow for the possibilityof once again hosting intercollegiate competition;• The practice field on Branch Rickey Way will receive anew artificial surface and lighting. For more information on the Remembering Mr.Rickey campaign, visit the campaign Web site athttp://mrrickey.owu.edu or call 740-368-3300.MARK SHIPPSVice President, University RelationsThe Remembering Mr. Rickey campaign is comprehensive inthat it will touch nearly all of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities —within one campaign we will be able to significantly impact most ofour 23 sports. The campaign is focused on both athletics and recreation, and it is estimated that at least 80 percent of the studentbody uses these facilities on a regular basis. The upgrades to theSelby field and track, especially the artificial turf installation, willextend the use of this facility seasonally, and it will allow teams toshare the fields even during the individual team seasons. Incomingstudent-athletes have reported their excitement over the prospectof playing in renovated and new facilities. Student-athlete recruitinghas benefitted not only from the obvious ongoing improvement, but also from the planned upgrades and new facilities that willcome on line as we continue to receive contributions to the RememberingMr. Rickey campaign.9 Women’s Basketball36

Home of the BishopsThe Battling Bishop men's and women's basketball teamsplay their home games in Branch Rickey Arena, nestled in themiddle of the Ohio Wesleyan campus.Named after Branch Rickey '04, who integrated majorleague baseball while president and general manager of theBrooklyn Dodgers, the arena opened its doors in time for the1976-77 basketball season. It seats 2300 for basketball andhas been the site for NCAA Division III playoff games for bothgenders as well as several North Coast Athletic Conferenceand Ohio Athletic Conference tournaments. Rickey Arenaalso serves as home of the Bishop volleyball team. The arenais part of the Rickey Center, which also includes the adjacentGordon Field House. For 70 years prior to Rickey Arena, Ohio Wesleyan homegames were played in adjoining Edwards Gym. Opened duringthe 1905-06 academic year, the still-unfinished facility hostedOhio Wesleyan's first intercollegiate basketball team. As manyas 3000 fans crammed their way into the double-decked courton the building's second floor, which still hosts varsity practicesand intramurals. The gym was named after John Edwards, who served on the Board of Trustees in the late 1890s and early1900s. One of the biggest facilities in the state at the time of itsconstruction, Edwards was one of the first sites for the Ohio highschool basketball tournament championships, which it hostedinto the 1930s.Selby FieldBranch Rickey ArenaAthletic FacilitiesThe crown jewel of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities is SelbyField, which is the home of the Bishop football, field hockey, track &field and men’s lacrosse contingents. An OmniGrass artificial playing surface was installed for the2006-07 academic year, making Selby one of the most impressivevenues among NCAA Division III institutions. Constructed in 1929,Selby received a new, fully-enclosed 2-level press box and newbleacher seats in the first part of a 3-phase restoration programand refurbished locker rooms in the program’s second phase. Thefacility, which seats 9100 and is the fourth-largest college-ownedfield in NCAA Division III, was the site of the 1988 Division III men’slacrosse championship game.Selby also houses the George Gauthier Track, an Ameritan FPsurface installed for the 2006-07 academic year. The site of 17 of thefirst 24 North Coast Athletic Conference outdoor track & field championships,Selby is believed to be the oldest facility in the nationconstructed to Olympic specifications and remaining in its originalconfiguration.Across campus, Roy Rike Field hosts soccer, primarily underthe lights. Widely regarded as one of the Midwest’s finest facilitiesfor the sport, Roy Rike Field was the site of the NCAA Division IIIsemifinals and championship game for men in 1990 and 1998 andfor women in 2001. Roy Rike also serves as the home field for thewomen’s lacrosse team. The centerpiece of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities is theBranch Rickey Physical Education Center, prized for both its size andversatility. Its Richard Gordon Field House, with a 5-lane, 200-metertrack, annually hosted the Ohio Athletic Conference championshipsand the women’s state title meet as well as the first 9NCAC championships. Indoor practice for fall and spring sportscan be handled there as well: floor space is larger than a footballfield, accommodating 6 courts for basketball, volleyball and tennis.Branch Rickey Arena, seating 2300, hosts varsity basketballand volleyball contests. Also in the Center are 5 handball/racquetballcourts, a squash court, offices, locker rooms and lounges.Offices and locker rooms also are part of Edwards Gymnasium, which is connected by tunnel to the Rickey Center and inturn adjoins Pfeiffer Natatorium, home of the Bishop swimmingteams. Remodeling in Edwards has recently included an expandedstrength facility.Softball is played at Margaret Sagan Field, which opened duringthe 2008 season. Baseball is played at Littick Field, site of the2003 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional; and tennis at the TennisCentre, a complex of 12 outdoor courts where the 1978 NCAA DivisionIII championships were held. The cross country teams run at nearby Methodist TheologicalSchool and Delaware Golf Club, which hosted the NCAA Division IIImen’s and women’s championships in 1984 and 2005 and annuallyplays host to the All-Ohio Intercollegiate championship meet. Thegolf team also hosted the 2003 NCAA Division III championships atthe Delaware Golf Club.
