The 1925football team, under George Gauthier, “The Little Giant,” went 7-1-1. Itsonly loss came to Ohio State by a 10-3 score, and it tied Syracuse, 3-3,en route to winning Ohio Conference and Big Six championships.2007 Ohio Wesleyan Field Hockey

These core values are easilystripped into three basic principles: an almost-unanimousendorsement of the pursuit of excellence in allthings, including athletics; universal identification ofathletics as an integral part of the educational missionof the institution and citation of the intrinsic value toeach of the participants, including personal and socialmaturation, the education of the whole person, thedevelopment of a healthy lifestyle and learning thevalue of the pursuit of goals in a collective context; andidentification of athletics as one of the best ways todevelop and foster a sense of community. The campaign isfocused on both athletics and recreation, and it is estimated that at least 80 percentof the student body uses these facilitieson a regular basis. The upgrades tothe Selby field and track, especially theartificial turf installation, will extend theuse of this facility seasonally, and it willallow teams to share the fields evenduring the individual team seasons.Incoming student-athletes have reportedtheir excitement over the prospectof playing in renovated and new facilities. For example, our very strong softballprogram will soon benefit from itsown new field, now being constructedsouth of the baseball diamond. Student-athleterecruiting has benefittednot only from the obvious ongoing improvement, but also from the plannedupgrades and new facilities that willcome on line as we continue to receivecontributions to the Remembering Mr.Rickey campaign.2007 Ohio Wesleyan Field Hockey

The goals of the Alumni “W”Association are to improve communicationswith alumni athletes, improve thecurrent athletic program and raise fundsto support annual operations of the currentathletic program. Through the efforts ofthis group, individual team alumni gatheringsare held yearly, such as a men’s soccergolf outing and alumni game to celebrate50 years of men’s soccer at OWU. Also, using e-mail, OWU keeps alumni informedabout the current teams’ activities andupcoming events. Each of OWU’s 22 varsityteams has a corresponding alumni groupcalled the Committee for Excellence. Thesegroups have programs to support the currentcoaches’ needs, mostly recruiting assistance.Another item is the annual DaleJ. Bruce Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner, atwhich time the University’s top scholarathletesare honored. Through Team OWU,the principal athletic fundraising program, and other special events, the Alumni “W”Association raises about $140,000 annually. We know of no other Division III universitywhich raises as much money annuallyto support its athletic programs.BISHOPs year-by-year11
