The 1925football team, under George Gauthier, “The Little Giant,” went 7-1-1. Its only loss came to Ohio State by a 10-3 score, and it tiedSyracuse, 3-3, en route to winning Ohio Conference and Big Sixchampionships.

2007 Bishop OutlookThe 2006 season held more than a few highlights for OhioWesleyan women’s lacrosse coach Kimberly Rocheleau and herBattling Bishop squad. Ohio Wesleyan set a school record with aseason-opening 6-game winning streak and tied the school recordwith 12 wins. But a loss in their North Coast Athletic Conference finale costthe Bishops the No. 1 seed in the NCAC tournament, and then anupset in the NCAC tournament semifinals ended the Bishops’chances of repeating as NCAC champions and returning to theNCAA Division III playoffs.Rocheleau will look to 10 returning starters and 17 returningletterwinners to reclaim the NCAC title and return Ohio Wesleyanto the NCAA Division III playoffs.“I think that last year, we peaked too early,” Rocheleau said.“This year, we’re working on making the changes to peak inmidseason and keep at that level the rest of the way. I anticipatewinning the conference championship, but we need to focus onwhat’s in front of us game by game.”Ohio Wesleyan set school records for goals scored (209) andscoring margin (104) last year, and the Bishops return plenty oftalent on both ends of the field.Senior Jamie Blake, a second-team all-region and a first-teamAll-NCAC pick in 2006, leads the attack. Blake led the team inscoring last year with 26 goals and 22 assists.Sophomore Hannah Mudge, who ranked second on the teamwith 32 goals last year and was a second-team All-NCAC selection,is another returning starter. But it’s not necessarily scoring which impresses Rocheleaumost about her attackers. “They are patient,” Rocheleau said.“They will wait for an opening and take full advantage of it. That’sa hard thing to do, because it pretty much goes against everythingyou want to do. You have to be smart and you have to be a teamplayer.”Sophomore Channing Bush, who scored 12 goals in 8 gamesin 2006, and sophomore Kelsey Lake will vie for a starting position, and Rocheleau also looks for contributions from sophomore TaraPorter and freshman Jessica Copeland.Junior Jenna Narwicz lends experience to the attack line.Junior Tiffany Holt, who lettered in 2005 but did not play in 2006,and sophomore Meaghan Henesy also return, and freshmanElizabeth Lambert also is in the picture.Ohio Wesleyan had 3 midfielders compile at least 40 pointslast season, and all 3 return in 2006.Junior Lura Allen, a second-team all-region and a first-teamAll-NCAC pick in 2006; junior Alexa Deaton, a second-team allconferencepick who scored a team-high 33 goals in 2006; andjunior Julia Fouts, another second-team all-conference pick whoranked third on the team in scoring, give the Bishops a deep andtalented midfield.Senior Paula Breen, who scored 20 goals and was a secondteamall-conference choice in 2005, returns after missing virtuallythe entire 2006 season because of a knee injury.“They are a huge threat offensively as well as defensively,”Rocheleau said of her top 4 midfielders. “They can run, defend, shoot and score. They’ve been starting since their freshman yearand they’re smart as well as strong now.”Junior Polly Burke, who started 14 games at attack last year, moves to midfield to give the Bishops even more scoring ability, and junior Kadi Kuhlenberg, who scored 8 goals last year, alsoreturns.Lura Allen was a second-team all-region pick last season.Freshman Haleigh Rohr will be heard from, and classmatesAbbey Miller and Sarah Teigen provide additional depth.Seniors Tracy Cepnio, Jana Kramer and Zanne Randall givethe Bishops an experienced defensive line. Kramer was a secondteamAll-NCAC selection in 2006.Freshmen Alison Hill and Lauren Rogers will makecontributions.Sophomore Caroline DeMambro returns, and freshmen LauraBartholomae and Dani Beauford also are in the mix.Junior Maggie Eichenlaub, another 2006 second-team All-NCAC selection, returns in goal. Eichenlaub ranked second in theconference in saves percentage last year.“I think that (Maggie) constantly improves,” Rocheleau said.“We expect good things from her this year, at least the same if notbetter (than last year).”Freshman Erica Gibson will serve as Eichenlaub’sunderstudy.Ohio Wesleyan’s season opens with a Florida trip to faceConnecticut College, Washington (Md.) and Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham. Allegheny, the 2006 NCAC runner-up, kicks off theconference schedule on March 31. Contests against BrockportState, St. Vincent and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps highlight theremainder of the non-conference schedule, while games against2006 NCAC champion Denison and Wooster, the top seed in the2006 NCAC tournament, spice the conference slate.22007 Ohio Wesleyan Women’s Lacrosse

These corevalues are easily stripped into three basicprinciples: an almost-unanimous endorsement ofthe pursuit of excellence in all things, includingathletics; universal identification of athletics as anintegral part of the educational mission of theinstitution and citation of the intrinsic value toeach of the participants, including personal andsocial maturation, the education of the wholeperson, the development of a healthy lifestyle andlearning the value of the pursuit of goals in acollective context; and identification of athletics asone of the best ways to develop and foster asense of community. Thecampaign is focused on both athletics andrecreation, and it is estimated that at least 80percent of the student body uses these facilities ona regular basis. The upgrades to the Selby fieldand track, especially the artificial turf installation, will extend the use of this facility seasonally, and itwill allow teams to share the fields even during theindividual team seasons. Incoming studentathleteshave reported their excitement over theprospect of playing in renovated and new facilities. For example, our very strong softball program willsoon benefit from its own new field, now beingconstructed south of the baseball diamond.Student-athlete recruiting has benefitted not onlyfrom the obvious ongoing improvement, but alsofrom the planned upgrades and new facilities thatwill come on line as we continue to receivecontributions to the Remembering Mr. Rickeycampaign.182007 Ohio Wesleyan Women’s Lacrosse

Thegoals of the Alumni "W"Association are to improvecommunications with alumni athletes, improve thecurrent athletic program and raise funds to supportannual operations of the current athletic program.Through the efforts of this group, individual team alumnigatherings are held yearly, such as a men’s soccer golfouting and alumni game to celebrate 50 years of men’ssoccer at OWU. Also, using e-mail, OWU keeps alumniinformed about the current teams’ activities andupcoming events. Each of OWU's 22 varsity teams hasa corresponding alumni group called the Committee forExcellence. These groups have programs to supportthe current coaches’ needs, mostly recruitingassistance. Another item is the annual Dale J. BruceScholar-Athlete Awards Dinner, at which time theUniversity’s top scholar-athletes are honored. ThroughTeam OWU, the principal athletic fundraising program, and other special events, the Alumni "W" Associationraises about $140,000 annually. Remembering Mr. Rickey CampaignOhio Wesleyan University is well into its first-ever campaigndirected at fulfilling the needs of the University’s athletic andrecreation programs as well as the physical education department.Named “Remembering Mr. Rickey,” the $22 million campaignwill have a profound impact on all aspects of Ohio Wesleyanathletics. The campaign was announced at Ohio Wesleyan’sCommencement in 2004, the 100th anniversary of Rickey’s graduationfrom Ohio Wesleyan. At that event, Rickey’s grandson,Branch Rickey III ’67, and Jackie Robinson’s daughter, Sharon, together addressed the graduating seniors. As of July, 2006, campaign fundraising had surpassed $5million and portions of the vision have become reality.Work has commenced on Margaret Sagan Field, the completionof which will bring Battling Bishop softball back on campus forthe first time since it was reinstated as a varsity sport in 2000.Work also has begun at Selby Field, where an OmniGrassartificial playing surface has been installed and the GeorgeGauthier Track has been rebuilt with an Ameritan FP surface.Among the new facilities to be constructed is an aquaticsfacility featuring a 25-yard, 8-lane pool with a diving area. An indoorturf facility also will be built, allowing unprecedented freedom andflexibility in scheduling practices for virtually every Battling Bishopteam. The turf facility will house a field of approximately 45 yardsby 70 yards, or about three-quarters the size of a regulation footballfield.Enhancements to all existing facilities are a significant portionof the campaign as well. Major enhancements include:• Branch Rickey Arenawill receive a new, glassed-inlobby and entrance on theeast side of the existing building, featuring additional seating, space dedicated to All-America and Athletics Hall ofFame honorees and providingeasier access to seatingand parking;• Gordon Field Housewill receive a new floor andsubsurface, new netting anda brightened interior;• Selby Field will receive a refurbishing of the press box andexisting concrete walls surrounding the field;• The field hockey field will be expanded to meet regulationsize requirements for both field hockey and women’s lacrosse;• Edwards Gym, which celebrated its centennial during thecampaign, will undergo extensive remodeling to include moreoffices and classrooms, as well as new locker rooms and conferenceareas. The existing weight room will be fully renovated andfurnished with new equipment.Tying the facilities together will be a gateway concept that willbridge the north and south athletics areas. This gateway willfeature green space and be integrated with the city of Delaware’supcoming bike path projects. An overview of Ohio Wesleyan's athletics facilities. For more information on the Remembering Mr. Rickey campaign, visit the campaign Web site at http://mrrickey.owu.edu orcall 740-368-3300.242007 Ohio Wesleyan Women’s Lacrosse

Home of the BishopsThe Battling Bishop women’s lacrosseteam plays its home games at Roy Rike Field, located on Park Avenue across from the OhioWesleyan residential campus. Also home of the Bishop men’s andwomen’s soccer teams, Roy Rike Field iswidely regarded as among the Midwest’s finestfacilities for that sport. Roy Rike Field hostedthe NCAA Division III soccer championshipgame and semifinals for men in 1990 and 1998and for women in 2001. It also was the homefield for the Battling Bishop men’s lacrosseteam from 1965-84.A fully-enclosed press box and newbleacher seating and a new building housinglocker rooms and offices completed a 3-partreconstruction of Roy Rike Field. A state-ofthe-artirrigation system and new lights andstandards were installed as the project’s first 2phases.Built in 1934 as a project of the Works Progress Administration,Community Field hosted football games and track meets forWillis High School and included an adjacent baseball field andtennis courts. When Hayes High School was finished in 1962, itprovided for those sports with playing facilities on the schoolgrounds and Ohio Wesleyan purchased the complex. E. Roy Rike’42 donated $25,000 to remove the track and upgrade the fields forintercollegiate soccer and lacrosse and intramurals.Prior to 2004, Ohio Wesleyan home games were played atHenry Street Field, located on Henry Street south of Selby Field.Athletic FacilitiesThe crown jewel of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities is SelbyField, which is the home of the Bishop football, field hockey, track& field and men’s lacrosse contingents. An OmniGrass artificial playing surface was installed for the2006-07 academic year, making Selby one of the most impressivevenues among NCAA Division III institutions. Constructed in 1929,Selby received a new, fully-enclosed 2-level press box and newbleacher seats in the first part of a 3-phase restoration program andrefurbished locker rooms in the program’s second phase. Thefacility, which seats 9100 and is the fourth-largest college-ownedfield in NCAA Division III, was the site of the 1988 Division III men’slacrosse championship game.Selby also houses the George Gauthier Track, an AmeritanFP surface installed for the 2006-07 academic year. The site of 15of the first 22 NCAC outdoor track & field championships, Selby isbelieved to be the oldest facility in the nation constructed toOlympic specifications and remaining in its original configuration.Across campus, Roy Rike Field hosts soccer, primarily underthe lights. Widely regarded as one of the Midwest’s finest facilitiesfor the sport, Roy Rike Field was the site of the NCAA Division IIIsemifinals and championship game for men in 1990 and 1998 andfor women in 2001. Roy Rike also serves as the home field for thewomen’s lacrosse team. The centerpiece of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities is theBranch Rickey Physical Education Center, prized for both its sizeand versatility. Its Richard Gordon Field House, with a 5-lane, 200-meter track, annually hosted the Ohio Athletic Conference Championshipsand the women’s state title meet as well as the first 9North Coast Athletic Conference championships.
