SWIMMINGOur swimming girls have been very busy. Since competing in the school champs, wherethey certainly made a big splash, they have continued to demonstrate their dominance ata national level.First we had Ruby Adsett in February, competing at New Zealand Juniors. Ruby had afantastic swim winning Gold in the 400m, 200m, 100m and 50m freestyle. Yes, a cleansweep of all Freestyle events in her age group. She also won Silver in 200m backstrokeand Bronze in the 100m backstroke. Ruby was only 0.07 seconds off a NZ record in the200m freestyle, so close. Our youngest national competitor certainly set a high standardfor the girls to swim for.In March we had Annika Brennan , Maddie Mason, Libby Gimblett, Chloe Larson andBobbi Gichard competing in the NZ age group nationals. Wellington again hostedour swimmers with Annika competing in 800m, 400m and 200m freestyle and 200mand 50m butterfly, continuing to show her excellence in these events being placedin the top 20 in all events. Libby also swam in freestyle and butterfly events in the14 year old girls and was also placed in the top 20. Chloe competed in 100m and50m butterfly also finishing in the top 20. Maddie showed her strength as one of thecountry’s top 14 year old girl breaststrokers placing 6th in both 50m and 100m. Maddie also swam in the 50m,100m, 200m and 400m freestyle winning places in the top 15 in each event.Bobbi dominated the 13 year old girls at this national event winning Gold in the 200m and 100m backstroke. She twice broke NZ records in the 200mbackstroke. She won Silver in 100m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 50m backstroke and finally Bronze in 400m and 50m freestyle. At this event Bobbiqualified for the World Junior Championships in Dubai this August . Bobbi was soon to show us that she was just warming up at this event and two weeks latershe travelled to Auckland to compete in the New Zealand Opens where she really showed New Zealand what she can do in the pool.At 13 years old Bobbi competed at the NZ open swimming championships, swimming against New Zealand’s best. After exciting heats we all watched the TV tosee our Bobbi win both the 50m and the 100m backstroke and a 4th in the 200m backstroke. She took another NZ 13 year old record in the 50m Backstroke.Congratulations Bobbi, you are truly a star.We also have Bella Bassett-Foss, Victoria Krebs and Molly Austin travelling to Invercargill in the holidays to compete in the NZ Division 2 championships. Good luckgirls. All this talent is certainly giving us plenty to get excited about for the Hawke’s Bay interschool championships in May and the National interschool championshipsin August. Go Girls!!SOFTBALLOur Softball Team had a very successful week away in Wanganui at the NorthIsland Division 2 Softball Championships before Easter. We had wins in pool play against One Tree Hill College 24-2, Wanganui HighSchool 7-3, St Catherines College and Orewa College 5-3, that meant weplayed Aotea College in the semi finals, a team we narrowly lost to in thetie-breaker the previous afternoon. It was an amazing game with all teammembers playing their very best of the tournament to completely dominateplay and win 11-0 to reach the finals. In the finals we played our arch rivals(and friends!) Hastings Girls’ High School, we were competitive but a fewmissed opportunities and the greater experience of the opposition resultedin HGHS winning the championships. Maria Mudd was named as our team’sMVP.The highlight of the week was Emma Houkamau being named in the WhiteSox training squad, the youngest member and one we are extremely proud of.Our special thanks to coaches Tama Houkamau, Shane Hurndell and SpencerBethell and scorer Olwyn Houkamau for all their time and efforts throughoutnot only the week but the season leading up to the tournament.WAKA AMA NATIONALSThe Napier Girls’ Waka Ama Nationals teamrepresented the school well both on andoff the water in Rotorua from the 18th –22nd of March. The team of girls consisted of JahmiraNaera (captain), Terell Lambert, TerinaTawhara, Tiara Crichton, Skye Brown,Reremoana Chase and Lilia Wakefield.Their first event was a double hull racewith Napier Boys’, a fast and furious sprintof 250m. They placed third in their heatwith a time fast enough to qualify for thechampionship semi-final, but unfortunatelynot the final. There were 60 J19 (or Under 19) girlsteams this year requiring eight heats, mostusing all eight lanes. The team performedconsistently in their heats to come third inboth races with times fast enough to putthem through to the plate semi-finals forboth events. They were unfortunatelynot fast enough to progress to finals. Thisteam was a mix of both experienced andnovice paddlers, with four of the teamcurrently eligible to be paddling in the J16(or Under 16) grade. With this team and the development of other paddlers seen at the Hawke’sBay Regionals and the Bluelight Regatta, the potential for Napier Girls’ HighSchool to be competitive in Waka Ama both regionally and nationally isexciting.Congratulations to all involved and a big thank you to Tama and JackiTawhara, Maia Wilcox and Karla Abbott for their help at Nationals and forcoaching and managing the girls throughout the season.
