lifting SpiritsBill’s StoryBill Lychywech had lost his house, filed for bankruptcyand as his illness worsened, he turned to <strong>The</strong> <strong>Denver</strong><strong>Hospice</strong> for help.“Within 45 minutes I was in a bed here and my pain andsymptoms were managed,” said Bill, 63, from his bed at <strong>The</strong><strong>Denver</strong> <strong>Hospice</strong> Inpatient Care Center. “I have friends herenow and I’m no longer sick and alone.”Bill is one of dozens of indigent patients<strong>The</strong> <strong>Denver</strong> <strong>Hospice</strong> cares for each yearat end of life – in their homes or in itsinpatient care center. In <strong>2010</strong>, <strong>The</strong><strong>Denver</strong> <strong>Hospice</strong> spent $1.3 million onindigent care and supporting services.“<strong>The</strong> <strong>Denver</strong> <strong>Hospice</strong> has been agodsend,” said Bill, who long ago fellin love with the mountains and moved to <strong>Denver</strong> from hisnative Wisconsin. “If I had known about hospice when I waswell, I would have been volunteering on my own. To havesuch relief from the pain I was suffering allows me to be ableto live a little longer. My life is ending very well because of<strong>The</strong> <strong>Denver</strong> <strong>Hospice</strong>.”Nancy Mathre roller skated, jumped intofrigid waters on a polar bear swim, flew ona powered parachute on her 77th birthdayand traveled the world.But there was one more thing on her “BucketList,” – to dance with the Radio City Rockettes.“Ever since I was little and took dancing, Iwanted to dance with the Rockettes,” saidNancy, 77, who showed up to audition for theRockettes at an auditorium in <strong>Denver</strong> decadesago. “You had to be at least 5-foot, four and Iwas 4-foot 10.”Social Worker Julie Winkel and RN SuzannePicard heard the Rockettes were coming to<strong>Denver</strong> and the Rockettes’ promoter arranged avisit to Nancy’s home.“This is the best stop of our day,” said AmandaSuchy, a Rockette since 2000, who was joined byfellow Rockette Vanessa McMahan. “Nancy isnow an honorary member of the Rockettes.”<strong>The</strong> two Rockettes wrapped a fleece scarfaround Nancy’s neck, gave her a DVD of theRockettes’ Christmas Spectacular and thrilledNancy and her family by doing a couple highkickdance steps.“Now I’ve completed everything on my BucketList,” said Nancy. “We’ll always remember this.”
