BRITISH CACTUS AND SUCCULENT SOCIETYSHOWS COMMITTEEOFFICIAL LIST OF SHOW JUDGES 20121 We are fortunate as a Society in having a number of dedicated members who, at their ownexpense, are prepared to take the Judging Tests to become Approved Judges. The ShowsCommittee asks all Branches of the Society to support these members by changing their ShowJudge(s) annually, and that they appoint the right number to cover the size of show being held.We recommend 2 judges for a show with more than forty-five classes. We also ask that, if morethan one judge is required, they consider employing a newly qualified judge alongside anestablished judge. This will give newly qualified judges vital experience to improve theirconfidence and the extra knowledge to enhance their judging ability. (Could you please note thecomments to Judges in the ‘Handbook of Shows’ under item 7.2).2 An ‘Approved Judge’ is an individual who has demonstrated his/her competence to judge cactusand succulent plant shows by attending one of the Society's ‘Judges Courses’, who has satisfiedthe Shows Committee by passing its examination (set at the Course), and who is otherwiseconsidered acceptable by that committee.3 Judges are qualified for a period of 5 years from the date of appointment, after which they areremoved from the list of qualified persons, unless they have re-qualified in the meantime. Tohelp in choosing your judge we have indicated, in the following list, the date of expiry of eachjudge’s qualification.4 This list includes the names of all persons who are currently qualified to judge cactus andsucculent plant shows.5 The Shows Committee cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information contained in this list. Itis largely compiled from the most recent data submitted by the individuals concerned; where noinformation has been forthcoming it has been gleaned from other sources.6 It is a rule of the Society that National Trophies, National Diplomas, The Ron Ginns Medal and theKeith Grantham Medal will be allocated only to approved shows which are judged by B.C.S.S.Approved Judges. It is the Show Manager’s responsibility to ensure that the appointed judge isselected from this list. They must ensure that the selected judge’s qualifications are appropriatefor the classes scheduled in the show.7 Judges should be engaged well in advance of the date of the show. When making arrangementsplease ensure all relevant contact details, for example, a stamped addressed envelope, telephonenumber or e-mail address, are provided to the prospective judge(s).8 You are strongly recommended to submit a copy of the draft schedule to the judge(s) prior to itsfinal printing so that any anomalies or misunderstandings may be eliminated.9 A copy of the final schedule, programme and detailed directions to the venue of the show shouldbe sent to the judge(s) not later than 2 weeks before the date of the event.10 Organisers of shows are required to reimburse, to all official judges they may engage, alltravelling expenses and such out-of-pocket expenses as are incurred in attending the show11 If difficulties are encountered in engaging judges for an event, organisers are invited to seekthe assistance of the Shows Committee12 The Authority to be consulted in case of dispute must be named in the schedule of the show. Inshows run under the auspices of Society, the Authority will be the most recent edition of‘Handbook of Shows’ published by the Society. Copies of the handbook are available from theAssistant Shows Secretary (Stationery) whose address is given in the latest issue of theCactusWorld (inside front cover) or the Publications Officer (see the advertisement for allpublications).
