Israeli Music Appreciation ScriptReader 1For 2,000 years, Jews were spread across the Diaspora. Different cultures emerged, buy wewere still missing something: a Jewish state where Jews could identify with one another –culturally, religiously, and linguistically. Jews all over felt this missing from their lives andnever forgot their original homeland or its capital, Yerushalayim. In the book of Psalms, King David wrote, “If I forget thee O Jerusalem, let me right handforget its skill.” These words are sung as a reminder to Jews everywhere that they will one dayreturn to Jerusalem.Jerusalem, MatisyahuReader 2Music can express feelings of joy, sadness, frustration, and exhilaration. It can be used as avehicle for change or it can simply reflect different periods in history. Israel’s strong history isreflected through the music that it produces. This music represents the politics, technologicaladvances, and evolving culture of Israel past and present. In 1948, the state of Israel was declared. This new Jewish state became a place that Jewsfrom all over the world could call home. Although this was a great victory for the Jews, it wasfollowed by a time of war. Opposing nations waged war on the Israelis, yet they managed topush the attackers out. Finally, after 2,000 years, the Jewish people have a homeland.Reader 3The 1950s were a time of uncertainty in Israel. While the young state was growing andstrengthening itself, the fear of another war initiated by one or all of its hostile neighbors hada permanent place in the Israeli mentality. For fun during this period, a lot of Israeli teenagerswould sneak into Jordan to see the natural wonders that existed there, including the famousRed Rock, Ha’selah Adom. Many of these teens never returned to Israel and it is presumedthat they were killed by Jordanian armed forces. Arik Lavy wrote the song Ha’selah Adom tocommemorate these lost youth. However, the song was censored by the Israeli governmentout of fear that it would encourage more people to try to see the Red Rock. The ban on thesong was only lifted decades later after Israel entered into a peace agreement with Jordan.Ha’Selah Adom, Arik Lavy

Reader 4Although the Jewish people have been in exile since the year 70 CE, Jews have maintained astrong presence in Jerusalem for nearly all of that period. During the 1948 War ofIndependence, Jordanian authorities took control of East Jerusalem and the area of landsurrounding it known as Judea and Samaria. The Jordanians expelled Jews from their territoryleaving these areas, including Jerusalem, nearly completely free of Jews. The famous Israeli songwriter Naomi Shemer wrote the song Yerushalayim Shel Zahav,Jerusalem of Gold, as a memorial to the capital that the Jewish People no longer had a part of.Following the Israeli recapture of Jerusalem after days of fierce fighting in the 1967 war,Naomi Shemer added a verse to the song that speaks of the return to our eternal capital.Yerushalayim Shel Zahav, Naomi ShemerReader 5On Yom Kippur 1973, Israel was once again forced into a full-scale war and its existence wasin jeopardy once again. While in the end Israel was victorious, the tremendous loss of life inthis war left Israel with a feeling of defeat. Naomi Shemer wrote the song Lu Yehi, based onLet it Be by the Beatles, to get the message out to Israelis that they have to move on withtheir lives.Lu Yehi, Naomi ShemerReader 6The 70’s in Israel were a reflection of the 60’s in America. The ideals of peace and free lovewere rampant, and the horrible losses of the Yom Kippur War left many Israelis with asuspicious, distrustful attitude toward the government. These feelings can be paralleled tothose felt by Americans during and following the Vietnam War. Arik Einshtein and ShalomChanuch were a pair of Israeli, hippie-style rebels. This is their song Ani Ro’eh OtachBe’derech Le’gymnasia, I see you on your way to school.Ani Ro’eh Otach Be’derech Le’gymnasia, Arik Einshtein and Shalom ChanuchReader 1Tzvi Kapik was to Israel in the 70’s what Tom Jones was to the U.S. His love songs are classicsembedded in Israelis’ hearts. Here is Ohavim Ha’tzirim, Young Lovers.Ohavim Ha’tzirim, Tzvi Kapik
