Principal’s Message April, 2012
What is this thing called “Service Learning?”
Helping others in times of need, providing for the less fortunate, and simply providing a hand for those
who have experienced a tragic event are all ways we teach people how to demonstrate empathy. Many
times these events evolve into a community service or volunteer project.
As a school or district we have asked students and families to be involved in canned food drives, coat
drives, penny collections, holiday cards for residents of nursing homes, and Thanksgiving and Christmas
drives to benefit the needy. These projects help students develop good habits, teach them the need for
volunteering, and show how to reach goals that benefit others and not themselves. Individuals or organizations
receive the benefit of helping others through the collaborative, focused efforts of the community.
As a staff, however, we took a careful look at what we were asking our students and families to participate
in. Did the students know what or where their efforts, contributions, and donations were going to?
What did they learn from it? How does it help others? Why would they want to participate in a drive?
These questions, along with others, provided the base for the staff to evaluate our donation & collection
drives.
While trying to find a way to answer our questions, the concept of service learning emerged. Service
learning is a deliberate effort of teaching and learning that also integrates meaningful community service.
It is supported with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teaches civic responsibility,
and strengthens the community as a whole. The purpose of service learning is to initially enable students
to explore and examine the needs of others before providing the service. In this fashion, the service
becomes meaningful, is connected to the curriculum, is reflective, and provides for those who are
being served.
We are proud to say that 100% of our students, Kindergarten through 4 th Grade, have participated in service
learning activities this year. To provide support of the local Food Pantry students organized a food
drive and “Pennies for the Pantry” collection. In addition Waunakee Neighborhood Connection, UNICEF,
and Haiti Allies-City of Solei School were part of a service learning project.
The Food Pantry Drive was more than a canned food drive. Our 4 th grade students visited the local pantry
to interview the coordinator to learn more about the communities needs, experience the pantry process,
and see for themselves what the pantry is all about and where it is located. From there they developed
a PowerPoint to share the experience with all the students at Prairie. Math skills were used to graph
the results of the food drive by the type and number of items donated. At the conclusion of this service
learning activity, students reflected on the project through journaling and classroom discussions.
Through student voice and ownership in service learning, we are proud to say that the Prairie community
is making a purposeful difference in the lives of others. Thanks for your continued support.
No Birthday Invitations
Distributed at School
It has long been our practice to not have
parents or children hand out birthday or
other party invitations at school. I
respectfully ask parents to follow our
practice to help avoid classroom
disruptions and hurt feelings of others
who do not get invited to these
parties. Thanks for your understanding
and cooperation by not putting our staff
or students in an uncomfortable situation.

Dress for the Weather!
Springtime means melting snow and
rain. That wet weather also brings wet
clothes! We recommend that you
send an extra pair of socks (or two)
and maybe even a pair of pants with
your child to school each day. It’s
pretty uncomfortable to sit in wet
clothes while trying to learn!
Also, as the warmer days approach,
we encourage students to dress in layers
. It is a good idea for students to
have wind pants or jeans at school so
they can deal with temperature
changes throughout the day. As parents,
please help your child make appropriate
clothing choices for our everchanging
Wisconsin weather. Please
be sure to label all of your child’s clothing
so in case it is misplaced, you can
easily identify it in Lost & Found.
MAP Testing
DON’T FORGET:
NO SCHOOL
Friday, April 6
Monday, April 9
Page 3
We will be conducting MAP testing for grades 2-
4 between April 23 and May 11. The
Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) is a
computer based test where students, teachers,
and parents discover what their student has
learned. The test helps us to evaluate each
student as to their strengths and weaknesses
and address them accordingly. The MAP test
offers us immediate feedback as well as helping
students become familiar with standardized
testing. We will be testing reading, language
usage, and math. One test will be given one day
each week for three weeks. The results of these
tests will be mailed out upon completion of the
tests.
If you plan on participating in Take Your Child to Work Day,
please send a note (to your child’s teacher and to the
office), call the attendance line (849-2235), or send an
email to janicehenn@waunakee.k12.wi.us These notices
should be sent one week in advance. As in the past, if you
can arrange for your child to go to work with you on a day
there is no school scheduled, instead of the official Take
Your Child to Work Day, it would be greatly appreciated.
From the Health Office:
Kids and Screens
On average, preschool children spend 32 hours a week with screen media.
Excessive screen time puts young children at risk.
Forty percent of 3-month-old infants are regular viewers of screen
media and 19% of babies 1 year and under have a TV in their bedroom .
Screen time can be habit-forming: the more time children engage with
screens, the harder time they have turning them off as older children.
Screen time for children under 3 is linked to irregular sleep patterns and delayed language acquisition.
The more time preschool children and babies spend with screens, the less time they spend interacting
with their parents. Even when parents co-view, they spend less time talking to their children than
when they’re engaged in other activities.
Toddler screen time is also associated with problems in later childhood, including lower math and
school achievement, reduced physical activity, victimization by classmates, and increased BMI
Direct exposure to TV and overall household viewing are associated with increased early childhood aggression.
The more time preschool children spend with screens, the less time they spend engaged in creative
play – the foundation of learning, constructive problem solving, and creativity.
On average, preschool children see nearly 25,000 television commercials, a figure that does not include
product placement.
Student Placement 2012-2013
Prairie Elementary staff will soon begin the process of
student placement for next school year. We do our best to balance
classes: equitable in size and includes
students with a variety of ability levels, talents or
special programming needs. In order to achieve this balance,
information is gathered from classroom teachers,
specialists and the school counselor. Parents may also
provide information regarding their child’s placement
by completing a Parent Information Form.
The following criteria are considered when placing
students:
Girl/Boy Ratio: We strive to maintain a balance of
boys and girls in each classroom.
Class Size: We strive to balance the number of
students in each classroom.
Variety of Abilities: We strive to have
heterogeneous grouping in all classrooms. Students
learn from each other at all levels.
Special Placements: (Acceleration, Special Education,
Remedial Reading, etc.) In order to best meet the
needs of children and utilize special teacher time
effectively, students with specific academic needs
may be clustered together.
Parental Input: Parental input regarding classroom
environment, student academic skills, and personal
characteristics will be considered. Parents should
not request their child be placed with a particular
teacher.
Placement is a very challenging endeavor and
our goal is to place all children in classrooms well
suited for their learning needs. Much time and care
will be given to each child’s placement whether or not
a parent information sheet is received. Information
supplied by parents will be considered; however, due
to the need for balanced classrooms it is not possible
to meet every request.
Placement forms may be obtained from the Prairie
Website or in the school office and must be returned
by Friday, April 13, 2012.
FRIDAY
April
2012
In honor of
NATIONAL PRETZEL DAY
The first pretzel was created in
620 AD by a monk in southern France
or northern Italy. It was originally
called a 'pretiola' and was renamed
'pretzel' later when it migrated to
Germany and Austria.
In the 17th century, pretzels
were known as a marriage knot.
In 1861, pretzel twisting was the
highest-paying job in the
Philadelphia region. Today,
machines do the twisting.
FRIDAY
April
2012
Skipping breakfast is a
common strategy for losing
weight, but not a smart one.
Many people believe that they
will lose weight if they skip meals,
but that just isn't true; the body
expects to be refueled a few times
each day -- starting with breakfast.
So make it a point each day to
fuel up with a healthy breakfast!
No time to eat at home?
Join us for breakfast at school.
April 27th is Arbor Day. Arbor
Day is a holiday in which
individuals and groups are
encouraged to plant and care for
trees. It originated in Nebraska
City, Nebraska. The first Arbor
Day was held on April 10, 1872,
and an estimated 1 million trees
were planted that day.
