Pontos HeatCycleRecovering heatfrom shower and bath water

The futurehas begunIt has always been the aspiration of Hansgrohe todesign products in line with ecological criteria. And because our element is water, we at Pontos –encouraged by Klaus Grohe – have been campaigningfor the sustainable use of water sincethe beginning of the nineties. In 1997, initial developmentsfor biological water recycling startedto undergo practical trials, and these providedthe basis for the technology we use in our biologicalgrey water recycling – the Pontos AquaCycle.Sustainability: Grey water recyclingGrey water recycling relies on the fact thatone half of our water needs do not require waterof drinking quality: fl ushing the toilet, cleaningchores and watering the garden are all taskswhich can be satisfactorily performed with waterof recycled quality.Added sustainability: Grey waterrecycling with heat recoveryThe way to save energy as well as water is totake advantage of heat recovery. Here the heatin water from the shower and bath is recoveredand used again. This saves on the energy forheating water and thus reduces CO 2 emissions.Heat recovery and grey waterrecycling make an important contributionto sustainable architectureFor those who consider modern architecture andsustainability to be inextricably linked, heat recoveryand grey water recycling should be an obvioussolution. Both systems help to reduce operatingcosts and attract certifi cates for sustainableconstruction, which in turn raise the value of aproperty in the long term.2

Here it is preheated and thenfed to the hot water generation.EThe cold heat transfer medium is removedfrom the stratifi ed storage tank and pumpedthrough the heat exchanger in the fi rst stageof the Pontos HeatCycle. The entire processtakes place continuously.4

Here microorganismsbreak down the dirt constituents of the water, with atmospheric oxygen being added.3The second stage of biological treatmentinvolves a repeat of the process from thefi rs t s t ag e.4In the fi nal step, the water is disinfected withthe aid of an UV lamp and stored in the servicewater tank until it is used again.5The sediment arising during the biologicaltreatment is automatically drained off into thesewage system.6If too little service water is available, theautomatic drinking water refi ll ensures that theconsumption points receive a reliable supply.5

Practical application: Heat recovery and greywater recycling illustrated by a hotel6Due to the high volume of water generated fromshowers and baths, heat recovery with PontosHeatCycle and grey water recycling with PontosAquaCycle make particular sense in largeresidential units – such as hotels and halls ofresidence.Because water from the shower and bath arerecycled and used a second time with PontosAquaCycle (e.g. for fl ushing the toilet), drinkingwater demand and effl uent volume are bothreduced signifi cantly. What is more, using theheat of the water from the shower and bath, can signifi cantly reduce the energy consumptionand hence CO 2 emissions as well. The illustrations on these pages clearly indicatehow our fully integrated system fi ts in with thedaily functioning of a large property.

Pontos HeatCycle – technologywith a great savings potentialDepending on the temperatureof the incoming drinking water,Pontos HeatCycle heat recoverycan save 10–15 kWh energy foreach m³ of grey water produced. This can reduce the overall energydemand for water heatingby up to 20 %.Pontos HeatCycle heat recovery can be deployed as a stand-alone unit or in combination with greywater recycling.Grey waterrecycling +heat recoveryHeatrecoveryGrey waterrecyclingCombining the two technologies brings benefi ts for properties that not onlygenerate a high volume of grey water but also have high demand levels forservice water and warm drinking water.A stand-alone heat recovery unit makes sense where there is only a small demandfor service water, but where showering means that a large volume ofwarm water is both produced and demanded – as is the case in sports facilitiesand swimming baths.Grey water recycling is worthwhile in properties where water is producedfrom showers and baths and at the same time there is a high demand forservice water (for fl ushing the toilet, irrigating green spaces, cleaning).8

Leading the field in green building certificatesPontos HeatCycle is the green alternativeBREEAM is the assessment method of the British Building Research Establishment (BRE) whichcertifi es buildings according to environmental aspects. In the category of energy effi ciency we areable to score highly because up to 20 % of the energy for heating water can be saved with thePontos HeatCycle. And the Pontos AquaCycle manages to secure a full 50 % of the points inthe fi eld of water effi ciency. The LEED ® award, which is issued by the US Green Building Council forsustainable construction, gives us comparable percentage scores. In its fi eld of “Ecological Quality” the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) awards us upto 10 % of the points. The DGNB Certifi cate documents environmentally sound, economically effi cientand user-friendly buildings.10
