might be considered responsible if this assumption by you caused a problem. It isimportant that the printed report, and the data stored in the database, reflects the extentof knowledge on each sample.5 How Patient Files are OrganizedThe data entered into the system is stored in tables. There are tables for patient data, pregnancies, sample data, physicians, and decision criteria (such as medians andfactors). Storing the data in separate tables means that the data for a given patient needonly be entered once, even if that patient has had several pregnancies, and severalsamples submitted for interpretation with each pregnancy. Similarly, the information fora physician, once entered, can be linked with any number of samples without having tobe re-entered. Each patient can be linked to several pregnancies, and each pregnancyto several samples. For example, if two requisitions were received for a new patient, one a serum sampleand the other an amniotic fluid sample, the following procedure would apply:Add New Patient would be selected from the Patient pull down menu for the firstsample, and the full patient demographic information, pregnancy information, andsample data would be entered. For the second requisition, when the same Patient Code is entered, the Add/ViewScreen for this patient will appear. You can confirm that the patient and pregnancyinformation is consistent with the new requisition, and then add a new sample bydouble clicking in the blank row below the existing requisition record. Only therequisition and sample data need to be entered, and this data will be linkedautomatically to the existing patient and pregnancy.13
