20 21Paver InstallationPlanning1. Draw a sketch <strong>of</strong> the area to be landscaped with interlocking pavers.Your sketch should include area measurements. This will enable ourstaff to provide you with the proper amount <strong>of</strong> materials required.2. Refer to pages 14 and 15 for paver sizes.3. Detail your job layout accordingly in order to minimize the needto cut or trim the pavers on the job.Excavation1. Ensure the area is free <strong>of</strong> underground lines. (If you spot a wire do notproceed. Call the appropriate utility and have them come and check it out.)2. Ensure the area is properly drained.3. Prepare the site by excavating the foundation to allow for a crushed stonebase to suit soil conditions and intended use. All topsoil should be removed.Required depth for pedestrian areas is 3” - 4”. Required depth for vehicularareas is 6” or more.4. Thoroughly compact the base layer to the desired grade and contourusing a mechanical vibrating compactor (plate tamper).5. Spread a loose layer <strong>of</strong> sand approximately 1” thick over the area.Draw a straight board across a guide (such as the edge restraint curbor parallel pipes laid on the base) to evenly distribute the sand for thebedding course. The depth <strong>of</strong> the sand should allow for the thickness<strong>of</strong> the paver and a small amount <strong>of</strong> compaction. Do not compact,walk on, or disturb the levelled sand.Laying the Pavers1. From an established straight line and a corner, start laying the paversin the desired pattern.2. Maintain straight lines by periodically stretching string lines parallelto and perpendicular to the original straight edge.3. Work <strong>of</strong>f the laid stone and progressively lay each row until theentire area is paved.4. Finish the project by using a stone splitter or masonry saw to cutpavers where needed.Completion1. Sweep the area clean in preparation for tamping.2. Using a small mechanical tamper, lightly tamp the entire areain both directions to bed down the pavers uniformly.3. Dispense a layer <strong>of</strong> sand over the paved area and sweep thesand into the joints and tamp again.4. Continue to cover with sand and vibrate until joints are fulland each paver is locked to its neighbour.Seal It For Added ProtectionOur concrete pavers are manufacturedto stand the test <strong>of</strong> time. This will enable ourstaff to provide you with the proper amount <strong>of</strong> materials required.2. Refer to pages 26 and 27 for wall block sizes.3. Before digging, carefully lay out and mark the area with spray paint.A string line and stakes can be used to further mark the area.Excavation1. Dig a trench. It should be a minimum 3”- 4” deep by 12” wide.(Add a minimum 6” width for Design Wall® installations.)Add a minimum-levelling base <strong>of</strong> 1” <strong>of</strong> crushed stone and then compact.2. Use a tamper and level to ensure a properly constructed base.Install the First Course1. If water pressure could be a problem, a drainpipe should beinstalled along the rear face <strong>of</strong> the trench to allow proper drainage.2. Lay the first block level on top <strong>of</strong> the foundation.Level each stone to its neighbouring stone.3. Use a level to ensure each piece <strong>of</strong> the first layer is levelside-to-side and front-to-back.Install the Remaining Rows1. Start a second row with a 1/2 stone <strong>of</strong>fset, placing eachpiece tightly together.2. If your wall is over 3’ high, plastic grid reinforcementshould be installed.3. Backfill the area behind the wall using frost-free granularmaterial and then compact it.4. If you will be planting behind the top <strong>of</strong> the wall, cover thebackfill with landscape fabric before adding topsoil to the area.Leave a flap <strong>of</strong> landscape fabric up the back <strong>of</strong> the wall to groundlevel to ensure proper drainage.5. When the wall is brought to final grade, secure the top twocourses <strong>of</strong> stones, including the cap, using butyl tape ora sui<strong>table</strong> adhesive caulking. Slab InstallationQuarry Stone® Installation1. After preparing your excavation (see excavation on precedingpage), draw an arrow with chalk along the stone’s longestdimension. This will make the assembly easier to follow.Planning1. Draw a sketch that includes measurements <strong>of</strong> the area to be landscapedto help determine the quantity <strong>of</strong> slabs, curbs and base material required.2. Refer to the product size information on page 36 for slab sizes. (Please note:although our 1 3/4” patio slabs are very strong, for a driveable surface youwill need to use paving stones.)Excavation1. Excavate the soil to a depth <strong>of</strong> 6” - 8” below the final grade<strong>of</strong> the patio or walk.2. Replace the soil with 3” - 5” <strong>of</strong> frost-free granular material to create a firmbase and allow for proper drainage.3. Compact the base material to the desired grade and contour usinga mechanical vibrating plate tamper.4. Spread a loose layer <strong>of</strong> sand approximately 1” thick over the entire area.Draw a straight board across a guide (such as the edge restraint curbor parallel pipes laid on the base) to evenly spread the layer <strong>of</strong> sand forthe bedding course. The depth <strong>of</strong> the sand should allow for the thickness<strong>of</strong> the slab and a small amount <strong>of</strong> compaction. Do not compact, walk on,or disturb the levelled sand.Laying the Slabs1. Start the first slab at a straight edge or string line.2. Continue nesting each slab in place according to your chosen design.Completion1. Use a push broom to evenly distribute stabilizing sand into the jointsbetween the slabs.2. Treat the surface with a sealer to ensure protection againststains and spills.2. Place the stones with the arrows forming a circle.3. Continue forming the circular patterns with the stonesand join the circles together.4. Fill in remaining areas to complete the pattern.5. Some <strong>of</strong> the edges may need to be cut to create a straight edge.6. Between the slabs, fill in the joints with stabilizing sand usinga push broom.
