Parent CouncilThis leaflet has been designed by theParent Council in order <strong>to</strong> ease the<strong>transition</strong> <strong>from</strong> Key <strong>St</strong>age 1 <strong>to</strong> Key<strong>St</strong>age 2 for the children and give information<strong>to</strong> parents so that theyknow what the school is doing aboutthis matter. This was an area the ParentCouncil felt needed <strong>to</strong> be developedwithin the school and we hopethat you have found this leaflet ofbenefit not just <strong>to</strong> you but your childas well. Entering KS2Even though the children do not have<strong>to</strong> go far when they move <strong>from</strong> Year 2<strong>to</strong> Year 3 at <strong>Welwyn</strong> <strong>St</strong>. Mary’s, thereare some changes which inevitably occur.This leaflet will outline some ofthose changes and give you some ‘<strong>to</strong>ptips’ on how <strong>to</strong> make the <strong>transition</strong><strong>from</strong> Key <strong>St</strong>age 1 <strong>to</strong> Key <strong>St</strong>age 2 assmooth as possible.Some of the changes• At the start of the day thechildren wait on the Key<strong>St</strong>age 2 playground and enterschool via the back doubledoors.• Key <strong>St</strong>age 2 children do notget an afternoon play.• Milk and fruit are not providedany more.• School closes at 3.20pm.School Procedures <strong>to</strong> help thechildren settle in quickly1. A buddy system is in place. In theSummer Term the Year 2 childrenare paired with a Year 3 child so inSeptember they have a familiarface and someone <strong>to</strong> go <strong>to</strong> if theyneed help.2. The Year 2 children have somebreak times up on the Key <strong>St</strong>age 2playground during the summerterm so they know what <strong>to</strong> expectin the new school year.3. Some Year 6 children and ateacher will greet the children onthe first couple of days in order <strong>to</strong>make the children feel comfortablewalking up <strong>to</strong> the Key <strong>St</strong>age 2playground.4. A teacher is always on duty on theKey <strong>St</strong>age 2 playground <strong>from</strong>around 8.40am.5. The children going in<strong>to</strong> Year 3 willstart with an afternoon play forthe first week or so—this will thenbe phased out.6. <strong>St</strong>aff are always available <strong>to</strong> seeparents. If there is an important message<strong>to</strong> give <strong>to</strong> the teacher beforeschool, teachers are available <strong>from</strong>8.30am or tell the office who will alwaysrelay the message. If the matter is no<strong>to</strong>f an urgent nature either contact theoffice <strong>to</strong> make an appointment <strong>to</strong> see theclass teacher or go up <strong>to</strong> the classroomand arrange with the teacher when an appropriatetime <strong>to</strong> meet is.∗∗∗∗The Parent Council’s Top TipsPractise the short walk up <strong>to</strong> theKey <strong>St</strong>age 2 playground now.Provide your child with a fruit snackand water bottle each day.Encourage your child <strong>to</strong> be more responsiblefor remembering <strong>to</strong> bringhome their book bags, lunch boxes,jumpers and musical instruments.Decide on a meeting point at the endof the school day; the Year 3 childrenleave school by the exit dooroutside the current J3 classroom.
