With the exception of SeventhDay Adveutists no other missionaries have entered this area.From its inception the Mission has been primarily evangelistic. Medical work has been undertaken at four stations,at one of which a large, well-equipped modern hospital hasbeen erected. The one hospital for women has a widelyextendedinfluence. The motto Build the school on theChurch," adopted at an early stage in the history of theMission, has resulted in a comparatively slow though steadygrowth in educational effort. Boarding schools and middleschools alike have, for the most part, aimed at trainingyouth from Christian homes. While some rural schoolshave been established this form of mission enterprise hasnot had a place in our declared policy. The recent decisionto open the doors more widely for admission of non-Christian pupils and to formulate a definite policy withregard to country day schools indicate the present attitudetoward these questions.The Chinese Church has twenty-eight congregationsorganized with elders and deacons. Three congregationshave their own pastors and are entirely self-supporting,being subject to the control of a Chinese presbytery. Thepolicy outlined (CHINA MISSION YEAR BOOK, 11)14, p. 365)has met with a cordial reception and sixteen evangelistshave been called.
