Scoresof boys pledged themselves to work for the church.This is a Chinese student volunteer movement.]SHANTUNG CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY. Dr. P. D. Bergen,:president. Faculty 6 foreigners, 13 Chinese ;about295 students.This university consists of three parts, viz., an ArtsCollege of 200 students at Weihsien, a TheologicalSeminary and Normal School at Tsingchoufu of about140 students, and a Medical College at Tsinanfu. Theunion was formed in 1904 by the American Presbyterianand the English Baptist Missions in Shantung. A grantof ,4,000 has been made by the Arthington Fund fora Medical College at Tsiuanfu. (See Chapter X, onMedical Education.")The college at Weihsien has prospered during theyear. Two hundred and forty-five students have matriculated, the largest number in its history. The workdone by the students and teachers is steadily increasingin efficiency. More than nine-tenths of the studentsare Christians. Every member of the senior class isa Christian, as in fact are all the students in the regularclasses. The few non-Christians come to us as youngmen who have completed their Chinese education, andwho are eager to acquire a knowledge of Western science.They come properly recommended to us by pastors andelders, as men of straight life and without bad habits.Several among them are not far from the kingdom.A growing feature of our work is increasing inquiryas to terms of entrance to the college on the part ofyoung men now attending government institutions.These schools, not usually being equipped with qualifiedteachers and almost destitute of discipline, have beenin their results.
