The students inthe university represent all classes, some from the officials, two having been sent by the late Viceroy of thisprovince there are also students from Korea and Japan,;and every province in the empire has had representativeshere. The larger number are from the families ofChristians in the country and villages, and these usuallyare the most hopeful class of students. From themcome the large number who devote their lives to Christian work. Two of our graduates passed the government examination last summer and were appointed tothe United States for further study. We take this as acompliment to the work done by the university, as onlyforty-seven passed the test out of over seven hundredgathered from all parts of the empire. Yet notwithstanding the competition of the government schools,which are supplied with very full equipment, and wherethe students are sure of government appointments whenthey complete their course, we have more applicantsthan we can accommodate in the dormitories.The character of our work is also indicated by thefact that our graduates are received for post-graduatework without further examination in several of theleading universities in the United States. This is trueof the Universities of California, Minnesota, Northwestern, Michigan, Syracuse, Boston, and Columbia.For four years we have been offering courses ofstudy leading to the degree of Master of Arts to ourgraduates who wish to continue their studies under ourdirection. Every encouragementis offered to the instructors in the university to continue their graduatestudy in connection with their teaching, hoping todevelop in them scholarly habits, to give them moreculture, broader views, and to qualify them to fill higherpositions on the faculty of the university. It is notintended that anyone shall secure the masters degree bydoing less work in Peking University than would berequired of him in the best graduate schools of America.
