We have also started, inChinese, the Institute Record, a monthly paper.This work of harmonious cooperation, of friendlyintercourse between Chinese and foreigners, of peace inthe Far Hast through friendships won and held, and ofcosmopolitan and philanthropic enterprise, is one whichshould not be limited to this one city of Shanghai, however greatit may be as a centre of influence. It israther our intention, or at least it is our hope, to extendthe work throughout the whole Empire and to let theinfluences flow everywhere as a good to China and toall mankind. The International Institute, in its corporation, is called "The International Institute ofChina," and the Mission among the higher classes, asthe work was originally called, was the Mission amongthe higher classes in China. If Providence should openthe way for us in the future, as has been true in thepast, and friends in the homelands can be brought tounderstand our object and the opportunities for good ofthe work, and the utility of this organization, then wemay have the confidence that the development of thework, as already exhibited in Shanghai, may be madepossible in all the centres of this Empire.Membership. There are at present 215 subscribingmembers and 37 permanent members, or 252 altogether,as compared with 209 six months ago. This is the largest membership that the Institute has ever had.
