Thisclass of men is considerably increasing as time goes on,and we may not expect foreign teachers to be employedon a large scale in China.Money is being spent lavishly in sending studentsabroad, erecting modern school .buildings and buyingapparatus. Large printing presses are busy day andnight printing books. The popular cry,"PuTung"Chiao Yu," Chia T ing Chiao Yu (general education,home training) is realized as essential to constitutionalgovernment now promised to the people. The educationof women is receiving unusual attention ;there beingin Chihli (not counting Peking) a total of 3,314 studentsand 203 teachers distributed over 61 different towns.Of the 120 schools, 57 are established by the Government, 47 by the gentry, 20 by private individuals.These are divided into 82 Primary Schools, 36 Elementary, 3 High Schools, 3 Normals, and 2 KindergartenTraining Schools.All these new forces are even now doing theirmighty work. The next ten years will be even moreimportant for China s future than the past ten havebeen. The real Augustan Era for this land of scholarsand books is yet to be.R. R. GAILEY.
