Tls. 50,000 are also set aside every yearfor the benefit of self-supporting students, who are doingwell in their studies and require financial help to complete their courses.CONDITIONS OF EXAMINATION.Candidates, either resident in Peking or from theprovinces, must send in their names before the examination is held. They must present themselves at theexamination in accordance with the instructions issuedto them. Special report forms are prepared at theBureau for their use, on which should be carefully anddistinctly written their ages, subjects of their study,what school or college they come from, what provincethey belong to, and all other required details. Theyshould also specify whether they are technical or classicalstudents, and should be able to refer themselves to somewell-known people here, who are understood to testifyto the truth of their statements if necessary. Prior toreporting their names personally at the Bureau, theyshould have a despatch sent by the Educational Commissioner concerned or the proper- school authority ontheir behalf. As a rule, applications for the examination should be addressed to Director Chow Tsz-chi(graduate of Tung Wen College and formerly Charge"d Affaires at Washington), but if in English shouldbetter be addressed to Mr. Tong Kai-son.Before the examination, proclamations will be postedand notices inserted in the Chinese press, stating thedays on which the examination is to be held, the subjectsto be examined on, etc.Candidates are expected to be below 20 years of age.Sound knowledge of both Chinese and Englishliterature is absolutely essential, and any weakness onthe part of candidates in this line will result surely intheir being eliminated on the first two days of theexamination, although they may be well up in the othersubjects to be examined on later.
