OBITUARIKS.XVMiss CATHARINE MARIA RICKETTS came to Chinain the fall of 1878. In the home land she had gainedgreat experience and did noble work in connection withthe Sunday School, the Y. W. C. A., and the BoardSchool of Brighton, England. Influenced and encouraged by Mr. Duff us, of the Swatow Mission, she cameout to labour for twenty-nine years in the girls boarding-school, and later among the women of her mission.After her arrival the Women s Missionary Associationwas formed, and she was appointedits first representative. Throughout her life, first at Swatow at then atChao-chow-foo, she spent much time in writing andprinting booklets and sheet-tracts. But she was mostsuccessful in teaching the women and worked amongthem always with infinite patience and labour.On the igth of November, 1839, Mrs. URSULAJOHNSON STANLEY was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. In1862 she sailed with her husband for China, and theytook up their headquarters in Tientsin. Mrs. Stanleybegan the first organized work for women and the firstboarding-school for girls in North China. She wasgifted with fine mind, highly cultured, deep and"abroad sympathies and a rare sense o humour." Butamong all the traits of her strong personality that ofmotherliness seemed to impress those who came in contact with her most. The Union Church, the Ladies Benevolent Society, and a ladies literary club were^greatlyindebted to her for help and inspiration. Of the last,she was the honorary leader until her death on the 8thof September, 1908.JAMES EDWARD WILLIAMS, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P.,was born at Seaford, Lincolnshire, England in 1855.After graduating in medicine at St. Bartholomew sHospital, London, he engaged in medical mission workfor some time.
