Webster,treasurer; Lilburn Merrill, M.D., secretary.During 1908 tbe late Dr. Louis Klopsch, of NewYork, requested the Chinkiang Famine Relief Committeeto .serve as a committee on orphan relief work in Chinaunder the auspices of the Christian Herald of New York.In compliance with the request the committee was reorganized under the name of the Christian Herald Orphanage Committee of China, and at once began to grantto mission societies support for destitute children of thefollowing classes a. Children, one or both of whose:parents are dead and left destitute b.; Children, one orboth of whose parents may be living, but who are in areally destitute condition.On behalf of the Christian Herald the committee isnow administering the support of more than two thousand destitute children that are being cared for andeducated in twenty-six orphanages and schools scatteredover a large area of China. Tliese institutions are conducted by fourteen different missionary societies. Threeof the orphanages are interdenominational.This orphanage population of two thousand childrenrepresents all degrees of destitution. Some of the orphanages have received children who were on the vergeof dependency, but not in a critical condition. Theseare mostly bright, promising little folk, who are doingwell in the schools. They were received because theypresented good educational material. This class, however, is not in the majority. Several of the orphanageshave received many of the foulest beggar boys, coveredwith all kinds of loathsome skin diseases. Not all ofthese have proven satisfactory. A few have run away.Soine who were too old when received have notadjustedthemselves to the new environment and were discharged.But most of these desperately destitute cases have been
