BKUTEr,, Yunho.Teaching;the Hwa Miao.To many readers of the Year Book the wonderfulwork that has been done amongst the aborigines ofYunnan and Kweichow during the past seven or eightyears is a familiar story, and need not be repeated here.Two Gospels (Mark and John), translated into HwaMiao, have been published by the society, but just asthe language had to be reduced to writing, so thepeople who had never seen their speech in writtensymbols, had to be taught to read. Recognizing thatthe printed Scriptures would be useless without readersit has been our privileoe to provide some of the men setapart to instruct the thousands of Christians who wantto be taught to read. No part of the year s work hasgiven us greater joy. The subjoined report is from themissionary in charge :It is a pleasure to acknowledge our indebtedness to the BibleSociety for the work which the colporteur-readers have performed(and are daily performing) and which has only been renderedpossible by the generous support of your society. They spend aweek in a village and then pass on to another hamlet, and bycarefully planning the men s work we confidently expect thatpractically all the villages will have been visited by the colporteurs at least once, and in a number of cases twice, during thepresent year. Some four to five hundred visits will have beenpaid by the end of December, and nearly three hundred hamletswill have been given the opportunity of learning something more
