THK BIBI.K SOCIKTIKS. 367while the remainder have visited markets and fairs. Rev.T. N. THOMPSON, Tsining.Tsiu has fully justified our expectations. His love for hisMaster, which made him witness so faithfully to his customerswhen he had a barber shop has, I am glad to say, increased withhis knowledge. He is a good walker and has visited hundreds ofisolated villages up amongst the hills. Besides this he has systematically visited the larger towns in the plains on market days. Some time ago a preacher from one of the neighbouring townstold me that he had several coming to his church as a result ofMr. Tsiu s work. He mentioned one man in particular, who wascoming over twenty miles to the services to learn more of theGospel. I question if any three colporteurs in all China havedone more talking in the way of explaining the blessed Gospel.Dr. ]. S. GRANT, Ningpo. How Colporteurs Help the .Missionary.We praise God for the invaluable work rendered by thecolporteur. Through his earnestness and zeal we have recentlyopened a new out-station on an island where the inhabitants aremainly fisher-folk, dreadfully superstitious and rank idolators.Undoubtedly the little chapel will be a light in a dark place. We are using the colporteur a month at a time at each of oursix out-stations, and the other mouths he goes farther afield. Inthis way each market-town, village ;md hamlet gets an opportunity of purchasing the Scriptures, and as the colporteuris notonly a salesman, but also tells the contents of the books he hasfor sale, the Gospel is proclaimed far and wide. Rev. W. RICHARDSON, Taiping. The Bible Society isrendering us very valuable and highlyappreciated help. I do not think any of our new work gives usmore satisfaction Hum does the colportage. We can not fullygauge the good results, but it takes verylittle faith to believethey are already considerable, and that the work will bring inbetter and better results as the days go by. This whole districthas probably fully one thousand villages. We have our stationand seven well-scattered sub-stations, but vou see how impossibleit is with only these that we should get into close touch withmore than a tithe of the villages. Our colporteur is a villager ofno education, but he is a most devoted and earnest Christian, aconstant reader of his New Testament and most eager to presseverybody he meets to taste and see for themselves. This worthybrother, during the winter, is going to spend a mouth at a time inthe neighbourhood of each of our sub-stations, but distant fromthem. He has sold between five and six thousand casli worth ofPortions already, and all in places too far away for our preachersto visit. Rev. H. T. STONHLAKK, Sinchow.
