MISSION PRESSES. 353NATIONAL BIBLE SOCIETY OF SCOTLAND MISSIONPRESS, HANKOW.This Press was established in July, 1885, by Mr.John Archibald, the Society s agent in Central China,to whose enterprise and energy its success is mainly due.It was first situated in the native town adjoining theforeign settlement, but on January 9th, 1892,it waslargely destroyed by fire. The result of the fire was theacquisition of a site on the foreign settlement and theerection of the present large and extensive buildings.These buildings also were visited by fire in the summerof 1907. This fire allowed of the redistribution of theplant, giving better facility for the execution of business.The Press is well equipped in the typesetting,printing, typecasting, and book-binding departments.There are about one hundred and fifty workmen. Mr.T. F. Buchanan has acted as superintendent for the pastsix years. Although principally employed in printing theScriptures for the National Bible Society of Scotland,this Press also prints the tracts of the Central ChinaReligious Tract Society. The 2,000,000 Scriptures andtracts of 1908, and the 2,515,000 Scriptures and tractswhich represented the output of the Press for the year1909 show a remarkable advance from the modest totalof 262,200 books representing the issue at the end of itsfirst year. Since its inception the Press has issued agrand total of about 4,000,000 Testaments and Scriptureportions, and 22, ooo,ooa Christian books and tracts.FOOCHOW COLLEGE PRESS OF THE A. B. C. F. M.This Press was established in 1889, and has constituted the industrial department of Foochow College,furnishing work for a limited number of poor but worthystudents during their course in the college. Having nopurpose of building up a large business, it has done alimited amount of work and employed but a few hands.No record of the output for the first two or three years
