FEDERATION AND UNION. 321Turning to movements expressing union betweenmissions at work in a common field, one of the oldest, aswell as most effective, is that provided by the threemissions at work in the Amoy region. This unionmovement covers the whole range of the work done inthe field medical, educational, and theological trainingand issupplemented by an agreement in regard to thedivision of territory. The missions concerned are theLondon Mission, the English Presbyterian Mission, andthe American Reformed Church Mission.A similar scheme of union work has come intoeffective existence in North China since the Boxer outbreak of 1900. The situation thus created gave theneeded opportunity for a review and a mutual consideration of the problem of re-organization. As a result ofthis the North China Educational Union was formed,having as full partners the American PresbyterianMission, the American Board (Congregational), and theLondon Mission (Congregational). The two other participating missions are the Methodist Episcopal (North)and the S. P. G. This union isworking very steadilyto its complete fulfillment, and its operations are seento-day in the Tungchow College (liberal arts), in theUnion Theological College (Peking), in the Union GirlsSchool (Peking), in the Women s College (Peking), andin the Union Medical College. This latter institutionunites the whole of the five missions concerned. Underthis scheme there has also been a uniform grading ofprimary and intermediate schools through the districtscovered by the missions.A similar scheme of educational union is proceedingwith success among the missions in Shantung. Herethere is an educational cooperation between the EnglishBaptists and the American Presbyterians, and the S. P. G.is also a part contributor to the union. This union isexpressed in the Shantung Christian University, havingits arts college at Weihsien, its medical college atTsinan, and its theological institute at Tsingchowfu.
