These have been fruitful and of valueas a preparation for more recent developments, but theyhave seldom been widespread or deep. Questions sentto more than four-score representative missionaries inwidely distributed parts of the Empire brought forty-fivereplies. Twenty-seven of these were from men whohad experienced in their stations in comparatively recentyears what the} regarded as marked revivals in theChinese church." These represent sixty per cent, of allthe replies and thirty per cent, of all the inquiries made.This is a most encouraging showing, and would havebeen impossible half a decade ago.Manchuria was the scene of the beginning of whatmight be called the Modern Pentecost in China. Thestory has been so well told by Rev. James Webster andothers and so widely read that it need not be repeatedin detail here. It began in the winter of 1907-8 inMoukden, under the ministry of the Rev. J. Goforthand two Chinese leaders who had visited Korea andcaught the vision and carried back the fire. Correspondence with missionaries in several of the leadingmission centres of Manchuria exhibits a remarkableunanimity of sentiment towards the movement andreports as to details. Evidently the missionaries ofManchuria, mostly hard-headed Scotchmen, than whomno abler nor less sentimental group can be found inChina, are of one mind as to the genuineness and thevalue of the revival.Replies from representative missionaries in variousparts of China indicate that the Manchurian revivalexperiences have been repeated in South China, inFukien, earlier in Amoy sections, and lately in the Foochowand Hinghwa regions, and most recently in theSwatow section ot Kwangtung.In Central China Nanking has been the chief sceneof revivals, but Kiukiang and Wtthu and other placeshave been visited.
