The largest boarding-school for girlshas no pupils, and there are ten others in the Amoydistrict. In some of these women are received. Thekindergarten work is popular with the Chinese, and thereis a large school in connection with the E. P. Mission."In Limchow, 300 miles northwest from Canton,there is a flourishing boarding-school of the A. P. M.with 70 students, and 250 miles southwest at Yeuugkong,another. In Canton there are many day-schoolsfor girls connected with the different missions, which arevisited regularly by the missionary in charge, who givesinstruction in different lines and examines the pupils onthe work they have done. In some of these schoolswomen and small boys are received.Through the work in the day-schools the seeds oftruth are widely scattered and carried into many homeswhich would be difficult to reach otherwise. Nearlyevery mission has a boarding-school, thus furnishingopportunities for higher grades of work and morecareful and systematic instruction than can be given inthe day-schools. The girls boarding-school of theSouthern Baptist Mission has 115 pupils, and a schoolfor women has 35. In the kindergarten are 30 pupils,and four are taking the normal course, thus beingprepared to teach. This mission, realizing the importance of educating the wives of their native helpers, hasestablished a school to which they can come and receiveinstruction, bringing with them their little childrenwhom they cannot leave. Last year in this school 100women and children were enrolled.The English Wesleyan School, which has beenestablished many years, has 61 girls and 14 women, andthose in charge have been obliged to refuse admission tomany applicants for want of room.
