In theAmerican Southern Baptist Girls School at Yangcho\vpupils must pay iu full for board and tuition ($5.00 amonth), and even the few who are on scholarships mustpay one-third of the expense themselves.Curriculum. Some of the heads of schools made anattempt at unification of the curriculum at Kuling in thesummer of 1909, outlining tentative courses for elementary and middle schools to be used this year by way ofexperiment. This year they hope to make out a coursefor higher schools. In these suggested courses, as yetnot generally adopted, English is taught after the secondyear ;chief stress is laid on the teaching of Chinese.Bible, mathematics, physical culture and singing areoffered throughout the course, and natural and physicalsciences receive much attention. Instruction on pianoor organ is optional ; in elementary schools it is nottaught except where taken up independently of the curriculum. In some schools the pupils have been so welltaught in singing that they are able to render classics ofsuch composers as Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Mozart, etc.,while considerable proficiency has also been attained 011the piano.Courses in domestic science have not been developedsufficiently to embrace them in the curriculum. Thereare no schools which do not require practical workfrom the girls, such as laundering their clothes, caringfor their rooms and the school rooms, etc., while someschools also require the cooking to be done by the pupils.Girls schools having industrial departments are those ofthe Church of Scotland Mission at Ichang, Christian andMissionary Alliance at Nanlinghsien, Christian andPresbyterian Missions at Nanking, the C. I. M. andMission at Hang-Baptist Missions at Yangchow, Baptistchow, Baptist and Presbyterian Missions at Ningpo,Presbyterian Mission at vSoochow, and the Davidson-
