286 CHINA MISSION YEAR BOOK.more intelligent and open-minded, anxious to knowmoreof Western education and social life, are ofteneager to see these ladies in their own homes and expressan interest which seems most sincere in their work. Itwas a noticeable thing that when a company of suchladies desired to form an anti-cigarette society in Peking,they came to ladies of the American Board Missionfor counsel. It was in their home that those fromdifferent schools met to consider methods, and when theorganization was to be formally made they asked thatthe gathering might be in that compound. Wives ofhigh officials, patronesses and teachers from governmentschools with their pupils, and the wives of Christianpastors with members of their churches, came togetherto form a society for the protection of their childrenfrom the growing evils of the cigarette habit. Whenthe officers were elected two missionary ladies wereamong the secretaries. Another effort to reach theChinese sisters has been begun within the last fewmonths by the appointment of Mrs. Chauncey Goodrichas a representatative of the \V. C. T. U. in this part ofthe country. She has already delivered many addresseson its especial lines, both in the Christian and thegovernment schools, as well as in churches, and prepared tracts and posters, which are being widely distributed. The need of this work grows alas ! with theincrease of Western influence and Western habits, and itis much that one of large experience in other lines ofwork seems called of God to this, to which she bringspeculiar power as a speaker and whole-hearted devotion.The reception of her message has already been verygratifying. Of the results it is yet too early to write,but it is a cause in which we may hope for large sympathy from the earnest-minded Chinese sisters, even thosewho are not drawn as yet to the truth of Christ.
