266 CHINA MISSION YEAR BOOK.The United Society of Christian Endeavor for Chinawas organized in Shanghai in 1893 for the purpose ofpreparing and circulating C. E. literature, arranging forC. E. conventions in the various sections of the Empireand promoting the C. E. cause generally. Much selfsacrificingwork has been done by the missionaries whohave been officers in the United Society, but the workhas been handicapped because there has been noregularly employed secretary on the field, exceptingthe brief term of service of Rev. G. W. Hinnian (1903-1905), whose faithful and efficient work resulted in theorganization of many societies and gave a great impetusto the movement. Dr. Hallock acted as honorarysecretary from the time of Mr. Hinman s resignationuntil the arrival of the present secretaries on the field,in the spring of 1909. During the past year the C. E.movement has made a decided advance the ; generalsecretaries have corresponded with missionaries andChinese workers in every province and have traveledin Shantung, Kiangsu, Kwangtung, Kwangsi, andFukien. A goodly number of new societies have beenorganized. The National Convention held at Nankingin May, 1909, was the largest and in many respects themost successful in the history of the United Society.Enthusiastic rallies were held in Canton and Hongkongduring the visit of Dr. Clark and party in December,1909,en route from the World s C. E. Convention inIndia. The services at Foochow, March 29th, inconnection with the celebration of the twenty-fifthanniversary of the founding of the first C. E Societyin China, were most inspiring, being attended bymissionaries and Chinese from all the Missions. Encouraging reports of union meetings held recently inNingpo and other places have been received. It ishoped that the next National C. E. Convention, which is to be held in Peking, next spring, willgive a great impetus to the movement throughout theEmpire.
