BI.ANDFORD.he committee appointed by conference to carry onthe work of Sunday schools elected an executive committee from its number, and this executive committeeproceeded at once to put itself in communication withthe British Sunday School Union, and in correspondencewith Mr. F. A. Belsey, chairman, and Rev. CareyBonner, secretary, received promises of substantial aid inthe event of a secretary being appointed on the missionfield. It had been felt that the appointment of a permanent secretary, who should spend his whole time in organizing the Sunday school movement in China, was essentialto succsss. Various attempts were made to secure theservices of men who were known to be interested inSunday school work, and at last the Executive Committee had the joy of securing the appointment of the Rev.J. Darroch, a former member of the China Inland Mission.Dr. Darroch signified his willingness to take up this officeafter a brief furlough in Kngland, and was to become organizing secretary of the Sunday School Union for Chinafrom the first of September, 1908, assuming the responsibilities of office in China from the first of January, 1909.Unfortunately, in the event, these expectations werealtogether unrealized. The British Sunday School Unionfound itvSelf financially handicapped so that it was unableto meet the demands made upon it, and Dr. J. Darroch,in the interval, accepted another appointment from the
