CHAPTER XLTHEOLOGICAL EDUCATION.Theological Education inNorth China.RACTlCAIvLY all the Missions in North China holdfrom time to time, sometimes for a regular periodof one or two months in summer or winter, sometimes as occasion may arise, classes for the training ofand colporteurs, to which certain ofChinese evangeliststhe foreign missionaries devote themselves during theterm of instruction. In at least two cases, those of Dr.Hunter Corbett, of Chefoo, Shantung, and Rev. H. W.Houlding, of Taimingfu, Chihli, the few months of classinstruction annually are interspersed with long itinerations of teacher and pupils, sometimes in small bandsuniting for a day of prayer and Bible study every fewdays, sometimes in larger company for more protractedperiods. In Peking for the past two years (1908-1909) aunion summer school for colporteurs and evangelists hasbeen maintained by the London Mission, the AmericanMethodists, Cougregationalists, and Presbyterians at theUnion Theological College, with an attendance one yearof eighty-six, the other year fifty-eight both teachers and;taught being drawn from the four Missions, and Chineseas well as foreigners joining in the work of instruction.In this, the third year of the school, a regular curriculum,covering a period of five or six years, is being prepared.The number of fully developed theological colleges,so far as ascertained, is not large, comprising: (i). TheGotch-Robinson (Union) Theological College at Tsingchowfu,Shantung, connected with the Shantung Christian University and supported by the English Baptistand American Presbyterian Missions. (2).
