One young woman has provideda building and teaches a school at her own charges.Another woman conducts a school without assistancefrom the mission. The churches at Tsingtau, Shentanand Tengchowfu support their own pastors.J. WHERRY.Progress in Independence and Self-support in South China.This report is based upon fifty-four papers (beingthe answers to fifteen questions) I have received frommissionaries living in South China, i.e., from Taichowin Chekiang to Pakhoi in Kwangtung and Hainan.A careful reading of these reports from about sixtycentral stations shows that there is at present very littledemand for independence in the form of anti-foreignagitation in sympathy with the national spirit such aswe find upon reading the Chinese secular papers.Practically all missionaries report that the measure ofindependence which the Chinese Christians have alreadyattained has been due to a mature growth on their part.Self-support, which opens the way to self-government,in nearly all denominations is, however, a slow attainment. Very few central stations are able to report anymarked advance since the Centenary Conference. It isonly in larger missions in which the church membershipnumbers several thousands that self-support may besaid to be a real issue.From the data which I have, it would seem asthough the Christians living in the southern half of the
