Annualconferences are held at each station, and are attendedby hundreds, all of whom provide their own food. Mostchurches have their own evangelists supported bychurch funds. Almost all out-stations have buildingsprovided by their own communities, in which servicesare conducted voluntarily by unpaid men. Churchmembers contribute freely of their time and means inevangelistic work at the markets and fairs.SHANTUNG.In Tsinan, the capital, mission work, though stillbehind other places in the province, has made strikingadvances the past few years. In the Presbyterian Mission three churches have recently been erected by theChinese \vith their own money, and three girls schools,in two of which graduate teachers are employed the;third being in charge of an educated woman. Thecountry Christians willingly paid the salary of PastorTing, a most successful evangelist, during protractedspecial services. One deacon supports an evangelist anda Bible- woman. An elder and a deacon have employeda teacher in a school which has grown from 12 to 33pupils. A union of Baptists and Presbyterians has calleda Chinese pastor of their own.Weihsien Presbytery has 8 ordained Chinese ministers supported by their churches, with salaries varyingfrom $100 to $160 per annum. All church buildingsoutside of the mission compound have been built by thenative Christians. One of them is of brick with tileroof, and seats 400 people. While erecting this building the congregation paid their pastor s salary and twothirdsof the running expenses of two schools. In theWeihsien mission all schools provide their own buildings.
