(of the province) the HwaMiao have practically broken away from the past andare under Christian instruction. Several thousands havebeen baptized, and they have something over fiftychapels; some holding 1,000, others 800. The Lesu,Laka gather together for Christian worship and havebuilt severalchapels."That the work of evangelization among the tribespeople is being carried on chiefly through the agencyof the native Christians themselves is quite beyondall question, for the regular staff consists only of 5foreign missionaries, 5 Chinese evangelists, 18 aboriginalpreachers, and 60 others, who give part of their time(sometimes only amounting to one-half). With somany baptized converts and enquirers needing constantinstruction it is quite evident that the time of membersof the regular staff must be entirely taken up withteaching and pastoral duties, leaving direct evangelisticeffort as a mere side issue as they go to and fro. Anidea may be formed of how the work spreads from thefollowing extract from a letter received "Leaders and:choice spirits are selected from the various villages tocome to the central station for Bible study in regularorder, and on their return they impart the instructionthey have received to others."From all parts of China we hear of the immensevalue of the voluntary individual testimony of the rankof the churches, and similar testimonies to thoseand filegiven above could be multiplied over and over, but spacewill not permit. This much, however, must be saidthat this personal testimony of believers has very muchincreased in certain parts of China since the times ofrevival were experienced. One of the most noticeablefeatures of those revival missions was the deep conviction of sin (often accompanied by physicial pain) becauseof neglect of the souls of others, and need we wonder
