Our pastors are giving themselves more unreservedly to the service and work of thechurch and are giving up the practice of interfering inmatters outside the province of the church, a practicewhich has prevailed more or less in most of the charges,and which has greatly hindered the progress of ChristianityIt is a well known, but nevertheless a sad fact, thatour church in China has not been a Sabbath-observingchurch, and that the majority of our members engagein secular pursuits on Sunday the same as on other days.This year presiding elder and pastors have earnestlystriven to arouse the consciences of our members on thissubject, and the Spirit has blessed our efforts to such anextent that some of the many are now "rememberingthe Sabbath day to keep it holy,"and here and there inthe cities and villages may be seen stores and shopswith their doors closed and with the sign hung up :11To-day is worship day, to-morrow business will beresumed as usual."Huchow District. The past year has been an era ofchurch building in the Huchow district, and our hopeis that within the near future at least fifty more churchesmay be built by the native Christians.Four pieces ot laud have been donated in variousparts of the district on which to erect churches.
