The weakest link in our whole educationalsystem, as conducted and controlled by missions, is theelementary (day) school. And until we have laid deepand well this chief cornerstone in the foundations, oureducational system will be about as stable as a pyramidturned upside down.CANTON EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION (China Mail).On December i8th, 1909, this Association was formedwith excellent prospects. The need for a general reformin the schools, and the unification of these schools insome way, concerns more than the missionaries and theChristian Chinese. The schools are before the Chinesepublic as European and American institutions as well asexamples of what Christianity is expected to do for apeople. Their standards should not approach Chineseideals as though the West approved and followed these,but should reflect credit upon the nations represented bythem and certain to be thus represented for a long timeto come. These schools are undoubtedly accomplishinga great deal of good in spite of their poor financialsupport, but in the face of the needs of the ChineseChristians and non-Christians who apply in vain foradmission to so many of them, the opportunities of thetimes are not by any means taken advantage of. Forthese two provinces, outside of Hongkong, there are notmore than two good high schools for boys, nor morethan one for girls, and no system of primary schools ;and the schools that exist are recognized as almostuniformly poorly supported and poorly taught. Theimmediate need is not for large institutions of higherlearning except as a means of getting ready teachers forthe lo*.ver schools, but it is for a model and extensivesystem of elementary schools and high schools.
