Chapter Three:Buildingthe BeastFera characters work like werewolf characters in mostregards. Most Changing Breeds, for example, regenerateas Garou do, are susceptible to frenzy, and learn Gifts andrites in much the same manner as werewolves. On the other hand, for all their similarities, theFera ultimately are not Garou. Most of these differencesare covered in the preceding chapter, but a number arealso covered here — in particular Merits and Flaws,Backgrounds, combat maneuvers, Delirium, Renown, and rank.Merits and FlawsMany of the Merits and Flaws in W20 are perfectlyappropriate for the Fera, or can be easily adapted. FairGlabro, for example, would be fine for Bastet, but inappropriatefor shark-born Rokea (who seem “off” even inhomid form) or Corax (who have no near-human form).Similarly, the Flaw: Metis Child is worth no points forKitsune (who suffer no social stigma for siring or bearingshinju). The following additional Merits are specific toone or more Fera:MeritsConstant Sending(1-pt. Merit, Rokea only)The character’s Lorenzini’s ampullae remain in allforms, allowing him to use the Sending even in Homidform.Manshape (1-pt. Merit, Mokole’ only)The character’s Archid form is very humanoid — acallback to the Lizard Kings with a reptilian head, the sizeof a Crinos Garou. The character must have the Archidcharacteristics: Bipedal and Grasping Hands to buy thisMerit. Manshape allows the Mokolé in Archid form topass as human in poor light, though anyone seeing thecharacter’s scaly skin still suffers the Delirium.Double Draught(2-pt. Merit, Corax only)Unlike most Corax, the character can drink fromboth of a dead man’s eyes, seeing the best and the worstof the corpse’s death.CHAPTER THREE: BUILDING THE BEAST207
