Purpose<br />
Believing that Jesus taught His disciples<br />
to care for the less fortunate, the sick,<br />
the naked, the hungry, the homeless, the<br />
imprisoned, and the destitute, the Good<br />
Samaritan Health Center provides health<br />
related services to the indigent, homeless,<br />
and the working poor. This includes those<br />
who are Medicaid and Medicare eligible as<br />
well as those who are recent immigrants<br />
to our country.<br />

Rewards<br />
In February 2005, Lynne and I had the privilege of attending the National Prayer Breakfast in<br />
Washington, D.C. Among the many speakers for <strong>this</strong> three-day event was Tony Campolo, Professor<br />
Emeritus at Eastern University and <strong>found</strong>er of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of<br />
Education. All of us, over the course of our lives, hear many speakers, most forgettable, few memorable,<br />
and even fewer that are genuinely motivating. Dr. Campolo grippingly spoke on seeing the face of Christ<br />
in those we serve and encounter, seeing His face in the routine as well as the unexpected, seeing His face<br />
in the lovely and the ugly, the destitute and dirty, and in life’s joys as well as pain. God’s image is also<br />
viewed in the faces of saint and sinner and the ordinary and extraordinary.<br />
His speech made me stop and think where have I<br />
encountered God? In the everyday distractions of<br />
life, am I even tuned in to notice His presence?<br />
Is His appearance subtle or obvious? Upon<br />
pondering these thoughts, I realized that God<br />
is here in The Good Samaritan Health Center.<br />
His image is <strong>found</strong> in the faces of our patients,<br />
staff, volunteers, and donors. He is here every<br />
day, and you will see His visage in these stories,<br />
pictures, and names. He is in the face of the<br />
lonely, homeless mother of two who desperately<br />
seeks care for her children and solace for her own<br />
pain of abandonment. He is in the presence of a<br />
volunteer who washes a wall made filthy <strong>by</strong> human<br />
“And the Word became flesh, and<br />
dwelt among us, and we beheld His<br />
glory, glory as of the only begotten<br />
from the Father, full of grace<br />
and truth.”<br />

In 2006, there were 17,526 patient visits at The Good Samaritan Health Center. The<br />
majority of our patients are the working poor, who struggle harder than officially poor<br />
families because their income is too high to qualify for government sponsored medical<br />
care programs. Seventy-five percent of the cost of patient care comes from the generous<br />
donations of individuals, businesses, churches, <strong>found</strong>ations, and civic organizations.<br />
Because our patients are poor, <strong>this</strong> is a funding need that will not change.<br />

For Dr. Adrienne Embry, a dentist, volunteering is a<br />
priority. She explains, “I have <strong>been</strong> volunteering since<br />
a child, it is truly my passion.” She works once a month<br />
at Good Samaritan. “I tell my friends and colleagues all<br />
the time what a wonderful place The Good Samaritan<br />
is. They are very flexible <strong>with</strong> schedules and volunteer<br />
times and most of all they have such a high regard for<br />
the Lord and their patients. Good Sam is such a great<br />
working environment, everyone clearly cares, not only<br />
for the patients, but also for each other. We never<br />

Nurse Practitioner Kelly Hudson joined the staff of The<br />
Good Samaritan Health Center in 2000 and follows a<br />
caseload of young adult to elderly patients, including<br />
well prenatal women through the 6th week of<br />
pregnancy. Because of their previous lack of access to<br />
health care, Kelly’s patients often have multiple acute<br />
and chronic health <strong>problem</strong>s that are out of control<br />
when she first sees them. She <strong>has</strong> followed some<br />
patients since she started working at GSHC 6 years<br />
ago. She is convinced that because of the rapport she<br />
<strong>has</strong> established <strong>with</strong> them and the continuity of care<br />
she provides, some of her patients have <strong>been</strong> able<br />
to make great strides toward improving their health<br />
status. Every staff member at GSHC is happy to be part<br />
of <strong>this</strong> ministry of <strong>compassion</strong>. Kelly thinks that patients<br />
value the smiles, <strong>compassion</strong>, gentle touches, prayers,<br />
and hugs that the staff freely dispense even more than<br />
the expert medical care they receive at GSHC. Kelly<br />
and her husband, Scott, have 2 children, Abigail<br />
and Benjamin.<br />

The very first Good Samaritan Charity Golf<br />
Tournament was a great success in raising awareness<br />
about the mission of GSHC in the community and<br />
raising funds for the work of The Center. Capital City<br />
Crabapple Country Club provided a beautiful setting<br />
for 62 golfers and 75 volunteers to enjoy a great<br />
day of golf followed <strong>by</strong> dinner, an awards ceremony,<br />
and a silent auction. The day would not have <strong>been</strong><br />
possible <strong>with</strong>out the support of over 40 sponsors, the<br />
donations of many auction and prize items, and the<br />
presence of celebrities such as George Rogers, Dan<br />
Reeves and Tommy Nobis.<br />

On April 17, 2006, the Good Samaritan Health Center International opened its doors in the Salvation<br />
Army Church in Doraville. The clinic is located in the heart of one of the largest immigrant populations<br />
in Atlanta. Family practice physician Gabriel Onofre, medical assistant Ebony Smith, and office manager/<br />
interpreter Evelyn Torres operate the small, busy clinic 4 days per week <strong>with</strong> 2 exam rooms, a dispensary,<br />
and a lab. In just over 8 months in 2006, 1,332 patient visits were made to receive the healthcare that<br />
patients would not be able to afford or access otherwise.<br />
Imagine the surprise and joy of one patient who discovered that not only was Dr. Onofre from her native<br />
country of Colombia, but Dr. Onofre’s mother had <strong>been</strong> her teacher there many years before. She could<br />
hardly contain her excitement and disbelief that after such a long time, she would receive care from a<br />
member of a family that had already meant so much in her life.<br />
