2007 TREATMENT & SERvICE INNOvATIONS
Cancer Center Opening
2007 marked the highly anticipated opening of the Tebo Family Medical Pavilion. Hundreds of community residents attended
open houses celebrating the creation of Colorado’s newest, state-of-the-art cancer treatment center. The 42,000 square
foot complex was designed in partnership between Boulder Community Hospital and Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers,
Boulder County’s largest group of physicians specializing in cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The Tebo Pavilion is home to a comprehensive range of outpatient diagnostic and treatment services. It is armed with
the latest in specialty imaging and radiation therapy technology, including Boulder County’s only PET/CT scanner and a
new linear accelerator that can provide cutting edge Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy and Image-Guided Radiation
Therapy. The center also provides access to the broadest range of clinical research trials available in Colorado.
The Cancer Center has experienced steady growth in patient volume since opening in July. In addition to the high-tech
cancer fighting equipment and expansive clinical expertise, patients have taken advantage of center services designed to
help patients cope with cancer and its treatment. Those resources include Colorado’s first Cancer Resource Navigator and
an innovative Center for Integrative Care. The Cancer Resource Navigator, a partnership between Boulder Community
Hospital and the American Cancer Society, offers patients emotional support and connects them with non-medical
resources available in the community, such as transportation to doctor visits. Tebo’s Center for Integrative Care provides an
array of complementary therapies, such as massage, acupuncture and yoga, that aid in the healing and recovery process.
Boulder’s new, comprehensive Cancer Center was made possible through the kindness and generosity of local
citizens. Approximately $7.5 million was raised from more than 3,300 gifts, which exceeded our expectations.
We want to recognize and thank the local volunteers who coordinated this highly successful fundraising effort.
TREATMENT & SERvICES
Expansion of Breast Cancer Services
BCH is committed to developing the most comprehensive breast cancer treatment program in Colorado. This approach
is based on three major pillars: providing local access to the most advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies
available, a high level of communication and coordination by our physicians, and providing a wide range of in-house
cancer support specialists.
BCH’s weekly breast cancer conference is the cornerstone of our multidisciplinary breast cancer program. Doctors in
medical oncology, radiology, radiation oncology, breast surgery, plastic surgery and pathology meet weekly to jointly
plan care for all newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. This highly coordinated team approach offers patients the
most optimal care.
On the technology front, we’ve added digital mammography (see below for details) and expanded our use of new breast
MRI technology. BCH now features the most advanced breast MRI technology currently available. New guidelines from
the American Cancer Society support expanded use of MRI screening for women at high risk for breast cancer as well as
those newly diagnosed with the disease. Breast MRI screenings can detect small breast lesions sometimes missed in a
traditional mammogram, and can provide better diagnostic images of breast implants and the dense breast tissue common
in younger women.
In order to provide more emotional support for breast cancer patients, BCH now offers a Breast Health Navigator, an
experienced oncology nurse who provides personalized services and support solely for breast cancer patients and their
families. Breast cancer patients also can use the services of our Cancer Resource Navigator for non-medical needs.
In addition, BCH also offers one of the best post-mastectomy programs available, with skilled therapists providing
one-on-one care to help ensure a successful recovery.
Digital Mammography
BCH has a tradition of offering the latest medical services and technology to Boulder County residents. Foothills
Hospital recently became the first hospital in the county to install the latest generation of digital mammography to
provide more accurate diagnosis. A digital mammogram not only produces quicker results, it uses less radiation than
standard film mammography and offers other significant advantages for patients — shorter exam times, reduced
need for repeat mammograms, and more accurate detection of abnormalities. Medical studies indicate digital
mammography is better at screening women in three specific categories: those under age 50, of any age with
extremely dense breasts, and pre- or perimenopausal women of any age.
A Gift of Love
The opening of the Tebo Family Medical Pavilion was an exciting event for the community and the BCH Foundation. The new
Cancer Center was named in honor of Boulder’s Tebo family in recognition of their generous $2 million donation to the project. Overall,
the Foundation received more than 3,300 contributions totaling more than $7.5 million—exceeding the expectations of our
fundraising campaign.
The Tebos are well known for their support of many worthy initiatives in Boulder County. They immediately recognized the value of
the Cancer Center when they were approached by the Foundation. “It was something that we could do that would give back to virtually
everyone in the county in a positive way,” said Stephen Tebo.
And it has. The Tebo Family Medical Pavilion opened its doors in July of 2007. The Pavilion is home to a comprehensive range of
outpatient diagnostic and treatment services, including the latest in specialty imaging and radiation therapy technology. The Cancer
Center also provides access to the broadest range of clinical research trials available in Colorado.
The Tebo’s involvement in the new Cancer Center stems not only from their desire to give back to the community, but also from their
personal experience.
Stephen and his wife, Shari, like so many others, have lost friends to cancer. Even closer to home, Stephen’s daughter Bonnie was
diagnosed with breast cancer at age 32. She had to travel a significant distance for treatment, an experience that fueled Stephen’s
desire to have state-of-the-art cancer services available locally.
Bonnie was in remission when Stephen was first approached about supporting a new Cancer Center in Boulder. Regrettably, her
cancer returned just a few months prior to the center’s completion. This unfortunate event deepened Stephen’s personal connection
to the project.
While Bonnie received most of her treatment in her home state of Minnesota, she spent time at Boulder Community Hospital as
well. As a sign of appreciation for the premier treatment she received from BCH, Stephen and his family donated an additional
$10,000 to the Foundation to create the Bonnie Tebo Felix Chemotherapy Fund. Stephen and many of his friends shaved their heads
in solidarity with Bonnie and raised additional money for her fund, which assists cancer patients without medical insurance.
We are extremely grateful for the Tebo family. This milestone project would not have been possible without their overwhelming
generosity and commitment to the Boulder community.
TREATMENTS & SERvICES
DEXA Scanner for Osteoporosis
We significantly enhanced our ability to diagnose osteoporosis by installing a state-of-the-art digital DEXA bone
densitometry system. Located at Foothills Hospital, the Lunar Digital DEXA Bone Densitometry scanner is the latest
innovation in using digital technology to measure bone density. Key benefits of the scanner include the ability to
precisely measure the density of bone in the most common fracture sites, to identify fracture risk in just 30 seconds,
and to accurately evaluate how a patient is responding to treatment for osteoporosis. Furthermore, a patient does not
need a prescription for this quick and painless procedure, and no special preparation is required for the evaluation.
Laser Surgery for Glaucoma
BCH now offers Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), a breakthrough therapy for glaucoma patients. SLT is a gentle
procedure that uses a “cold” laser to open clogged drains in the eye, quickly bringing eye pressure down to a safe level
and slowing or preventing vision loss. The procedure takes minutes to perform on an outpatient basis, has none of the
side effects of medication and reduces the need for lifelong use of expensive eye drops.
New Digital Cath Lab
Our new state-of-the-art, all-digital Cath Lab is an example of our firm commitment to provide leading edge
treatment for heart problems. The new Cath Lab’s enhanced image resolution improves care by allowing cardiologists
to obtain clearer pictures of smaller vessels. The Cath Lab is located at Boulder Community Hospital.
Our old analog Cath Lab was disassembled and donated to a new 32-bed pediatric cardiac center at Black Lion Hospital
in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This is the first Cath Lab in that country.
New 64-Slice CT Scanner
Our main campus also enhanced its diagnostic capabilities by installing a state-of-the-art 64-slice CT scanner
last summer. This latest generation scanner significantly improves our ability to diagnose strokes, heart disease and
trauma-related injuries.
Giving
Back
Four years ago, Don Dolifka was in a terrible car accident. He
arrived at Boulder Community Hospital in critical condition with
extremely serious injuries. Thankfully, after surgery, 10 long
days in the ICU and an additional four days at the hospital, Don
made a full recovery.
Those 15 days were an incredibly stressful time for the whole
Dolifka family. But as the hours and days went by, Don and his
wife, Lani, both found a growing sense of comfort and strength
at BCH.
Don’s experience in the ICU left a lasting impression. He
remembered staff around him all the time — “The attention I
got made me feel like I was the only patient there.” Lani
recalled the outstanding care Don received from the ICU
nurses — “They all had such positive attitudes, despite
the physical and emotional strain of their jobs.”
The hospital’s facilities, technology and expertise inspired
confidence that Don would recover. However, the calm and
caring staff at Boulder Community were the true wellspring of
their growing faith that all would end well.
Since the accident, the Dolifkas have become active supporters
of the Foundation by participating in annual fundraisers. But
Don and Lani were motivated to do more. Specifically, they
wanted to give back directly to those who had helped them four
years ago. Accordingly, they generously donated new beds and
gurneys to the ER and ICU. As Don said, “We hoped this gift
would directly impact the ER and ICU staff and help make their
jobs easier.”
The Dolifka’s gift is important in many ways. It has increased
the hospital’s capacity to help more ER and ICU patients. For
the ER and ICU staff, it certainly does “make their jobs easier.”
Moreover, this type of generous gift invigorates all BCH employees,
because it signifies that their dedication and hard work are
acknowledged and sincerely valued by the patients and families
they serve.
Thank you, Don and Lani Dolifka. Your generosity and kindness
have truly made a difference.
Better Health for Boulder County
BCH is committed to offering local access to medical services that are vital for many in our community. Some important
services are provided by the hospital at a financial loss because insurance payments don’t cover the cost of the service, or
because many of the patients who need that care have minimal or no insurance coverage. Some of these programs include:
Autism Care
BCH offers one of only three hospital-based programs in Colorado that provides comprehensive services for the assessment
and treatment of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Already stressed local families benefit greatly from obtaining
first-rate rehabilitation services close to home.
beacon Center for Infectious Diseases
BCH operates Boulder County’s only specialized medical clinic for individuals with HIV/AIDS. There are only five such clinics
in the entire state of Colorado.
Warm Water Therapy Pool
Our warm water therapy pool helps patients who have difficulty exercising on land improve their mobility and maintain
their independence after injury or illness. Many local senior citizens also use the pool for fitness and recreation activities.

Providing Comfort
to Hospital Patients
The BCH Foundation has received gifts of all shapes and sizes throughout the years, from large financial donations to small tokens
of appreciation. Every gift is significant, because each is a symbol of the tremendous support the hospital and Foundation receive
from the community.
Girl Scout Troop 1002 made an especially meaningful donation to the hospital in 2007. The eight girls in Troop 1002, with help from
their fellow Girl Scouts, created 10 colorful, cozy fleece blankets for our patients. This gift is so important to us because it truly came
from the hearts and minds of these young girls.
Troop 1002 spent a great deal of time deciding on an appropriate project. The girls wanted to produce something tangible that
would have a meaningful impact on people’s lives. Many ideas were considered. Ultimately, the concept of making blankets for sick
patients resonated with the girls. They were motivated by the belief that their gifts could bring comfort to individuals, both young
and old, who needed it most.
So, one day last fall, 60 Girl Scouts, ages six through 13, came together ready to work! Fabric after fabric, knot after knot, they
created 10 bi-colored blankets from yards of thick soft fleece. In addition to making the blankets, the girls also wrote cards of
encouragement and good wishes for patients.
Boulder Community Hospital is extremely appreciative of this special gift. We’d like to thank each and every Girl Scout, as well as
their troop leaders. Your heartfelt contribution has a special meaning for the hospital and our patients.
Expanded Community Outreach Programs
Day of Dance for Good Health
We repeated this successful event in 2007 in partnership with the City of Boulder to encourage women (and men) to
take charge of their health. Hundreds of participants enjoyed a morning of affordable health screenings, free educational
lectures and free dance instruction.
Health lectures
The hospital and its physicians held 32 educational lectures in Boulder and neighboring communities. These talks—most
of them free—attracted more than 2,500 people and offered attendees an interactive exchange with medical experts.
Classes
From childbirth education to aerobic pool exercise, BCH offered community members an excellent opportunity to
become proactive about their health. Approximately 4,400 people of all ages attended one of the hospital’s more than
350 health classes.
Participation by Community Members
Auxiliary
The members of the BCH Auxiliary serve as ambassadors, helping meet the evolving needs of our community hospital.
Some of the Auxiliary’s important accomplishments include purchasing life-saving equipment, providing funds for patients’
medical care and rehabilitation, and awarding scholarships to local high school graduates. This highly successful organization
completed its fifty-third year of service in 2007.
volunteers
The “community” in Boulder Community Hospital comes from an energetic and diverse group of dedicated volunteers
who give of their precious talents to assist patients, their families and the medical staff of the hospital.
In 2007, 752 volunteers contributed more than 70,000 hours to help the hospital achieve its mission. Our wonderful
volunteers, ages 14 to 95, make a positive and significant difference in the quality of care at BCH. Whether working at an
information desk, serving in one of the three gift shops, administering hearing tests to newborns, providing pet or music
therapy, or making a patient’s chemotherapy treatment less traumatic, community volunteers are an integral part of the
BCH culture and are representative of what a true “community hospital” stands for.
FINANCES
Financial Condition
During 2007, some 415,200 patients were seen for inpatient and outpatient services at BCH facilities. It cost the
hospital $237.5 million to deliver that care. The major components of that expense included:
• $125 million for wages and benefits for our employees
• $47.1 million for medical supplies
• $29.6 million for equipment, maintenance, utilities and depreciation
• $17.5 million for purchased services
• $10.3 million for other types of costs, such as insurance, dues and licenses, education and business expenses
• $8 million for interest and amortization
Since the hospital generated income of $243 million, that left a balance of $5.5 million in net income. That surplus is
reinvested in upgrading our facilities and bringing new services to our community. The net worth of the hospital was
$250 million as of December 31, 2007.
As an independent, locally governed hospital, BCH is strongly committed to providing necessary medical care to all segments
of our community. While maximizing access is a great benefit for local residents, achieving that goal exacts a financial toll
on the hospital. In 2007, we provided $43 million in uncompensated and charity care to members of our community. This
expense was incurred in several ways.
BCH voluntarily participates in the Colorado Indigent Care Program (CICP), which provides nominal reimbursement for services
provided to indigent state residents who do not qualify for Medicaid.
The Medicaid program, a state-federal partnership, pays the hospital for treating qualified low-income citizens. However,
the Medicaid payment for most medical services is less than what it costs BCH to provide the treatment.
“We Care” is a unique BCH program that provides low-income patients with outright charity to cover their hospital bills.
BCH also incurs bad debts from patients who are unable to pay their bills. The totals in each category are:
We Care $1,995,000
CICP (underpayments) $4,293,0000
bad debt $6,700,000
Medicaid (underpayments) $7,300,000
These dollar amounts are the hospital’s actual unreimbursed costs for providing services.

bCH FOuNDATION
“ The Foundation exists to enhance the quality and availability
of health care services in Boulder County by generating
and administering all charitable gifts to our not-for-profit
community-owned hospital.”
Foundation Supports Major Medical Advances
On behalf of the BCH Foundation Board of Trustees, I want to thank the citizens of the greater Boulder valley for their
kind and generous support of our community-owned and governed non-profit hospital. We are all very fortunate to
live in a region that is so well served by a hospital that prides itself on high quality and compassionate patient care
delivered by an excellent and highly trained medical staff. Your gifts to the BCH Foundation further enhance the quality
of care for our family, friends and neighbors.
With an endowment exceeding $20 million, the Foundation Board of Trustees can award meaningful annual grants
to various hospital departments that can invest in new medical technologies and enhance patient care.
For example, in 2007 your gifts:
• Enabled the construction of a new world class Cancer Care Center;
• Provided acquisition of a new state-of-the-art 64-slice CT scanner;
• Supported cancer clinical research trials;
• Purchased equipment to serve children with autism;
• Offered mammograms for women who lack medical insurance;
• Made available technology for the hearing impaired.
Like you, people give to Boulder Community Hospital for any number of reasons. Perhaps they or a loved one were a
patient and are grateful for the wonderful care they received and were inspired to “give back.” Gifts are also often
made in tribute to or memory of a loved one or friend. Many name Boulder Community Hospital in their will; others
make an annual gift to BCH as members of the Chairman’s Club or President’s Club.
Whatever the reason you give, please know we are honored by your support and trust. Also, be assured that 100% of
your gift goes directly to the area of patient care or hospital service that you name. There are no additional administrative
fees deducted!
Thank you and may 2008 be a happy, safe and healthy year!
Sincerely,
Jacob T. Puzio
Chairman, Board of Trustees

Auxiliary Supports Hospital Services
In 2007 the BCH Auxiliary had another good year: OK, our best year ever.
We raised nearly $340,000 and the best part is, we gave it all away. Some of
our favorite places to fund include: the Breast Cancer Treatment Fund, health
care-related educational scholarships for both BCH employees and high school
seniors in the Boulder Valley School District, art at the hospital, and mini-grants
for various departments. It took a lot of people to make this all happen and
I’d like to thank and recognize as many as possible.
First, I have to thank the community of Boulder. People and businesses were
again tremendous at attending our events like the Black Tie Dinner and
our Fall Fashion Show and helping to sponsor these events.
Next, I need to thank the hospital, from the administration and employees to
the volunteers. Without them, we would not have this great hospital to support
or such excellent health care.
Lastly, I must thank all the Auxiliary members and the Auxiliary Board. The
donation of their time, talents and ideas made this year what it was.
Thanks again,
