OUR HISTORY
The history of Joya goes hand in hand with Nicaragua’s evolution over the
last five decades as one of the most complex and enchanting countries in
Latin America. The richness of our history allows us to be conscious and
humbled of who we are, while allowing us to talk about our experience
with authenticity. We invite you to explore our beginnings and our
traditions as we continue to build towards a future full of hope.
1970
The Golden Years
Joya de Nicaragua becomes the official cigar brand
of the White House. Nicaraguan cigars start to be
known as an exquisite alternative to Cuban cigars
after the Embargo, with Joya leading the bunch.
During this decade, Joya de Nicaragua gained great
popularity among cigar smokers all over the world
1968
The birth of Joya
On February 29, J.F. Bermejo and Simón Camacho
established Nicaragua Cigar Co., the country’s
first cigar manufacturer, at the heart of Estelí.
They produced Joya de Nicaragua, the first national
cigar brand to be marketed worldwide.
1979
Revolution and Civil War
On 1979, the Sandinista Revolution brings the
Somoza’s dinasty to an end. The factory, destroyed
during the war is rebuilt by the workers and the
production starts again.

OUR CRAFT
Our cigars are handcrafted by the most skilled tabaqueros using the
finest tobaccos. They have been handcrafting cigars, on average for more
than 28 years. The Joya process is completely human centered, with each
leaf processed and every cigar rolled and cared-for by hands; it’s focused
on consistency and special attention to details. All of our cigars are filled
with the essence of our people; their experience and passion are what
makes Joya what it is.
1980
The Reconstruction
The company was nationalized. A commercial
embargo by the US government forced Joya de
Nicaragua out of its most important market.
To surpass this obstacle, Joya de Nicaragua
and its other brands are exported to European
countries and Canada.
PRESENT
Evolution & Innovation
Under the leadership of Dr. Alejandro Martínez Cuenca, Joya
has seen great succes with cigars reminiscent of its glorious past.
Antaño 1970, Dark Corojo, Cabinetta Series, CyB and more
recently Cuatro Cinco and our latest JOYA RED just to name a
few of the great cigars we’re proud of.
Our growing executive team, together with Drew Estate and
our international partners, ewstablished the perfect alliance of
authenticity and innovation.

1992
A New Era
The revolutionary government is no longer in power and the
war ends. After a decade of embargo, the authentic Joya de
Nicaragua returns to the United States with great success.
In 1994 Tabacos Puros de Nicaragua S.A, owned by Doctor
Alejandro Martínez Cuenca, acquires Nicaragua Cigar Co.
There is a growing demand for Nicaraguan cigars.
Dozens of factories open in Estelí, and the rebirth of the
Nicaraguan tobacco industry begins.

THE ORIGIN
Joya de Nicaragua Clásico was the very first Nicaraguan puro exported from Nicaragua,
and the only brand to have ever been officially recognized as the country’s national cigar. It
is currently the best selling cigar for Joya de Nicaragua in the European market.

THE FLAVOR BOMB
Departing from Joya’s tradition of crafting mainly Nicaraguan leaf puros, the CyB has been
intricately blended to be a smoke comprised of the finest tobaccos from four independent
countries of origin. CyB is the first joint cigar creation of the Joya de Nicaragua factory
between Master Maker Dr. Alejandro Martínez Cuenca and cigar expert José Blanco.

Rosalones is one of the original brands produced since the beginnings of Joya de
Nicaragua. It has been considered the smaller brother of the Joya de Nicaragua Clásico.
Returning to the market at the end of 2010, after two decades of rest, Rosalones is an
affordable alternative to Nicaragua’s taste.
