Page 4Colorado Bowler NewsMike DiasStaff WriterIn the April issue of Colorado Bowler I wrote about some common lowerbody mistakes (for a re-print please send me an e-mail and I will get a copyto you). This month I’d like to talk about the upper body, and some of thethings we can improve upon to increase the quality and consistency of yourshots. The SINGLE, most common misunderstood part of the upper body is theshoulders. I still, to this day, hear people admonishing others to “keep yourshoulder up”. Allow the ball side shoulder to be 4-6 inches lower than the othershoulder. This does a couple of things. First, it allows the ball-side shoulder torelax, which creates more freedom of motion in the swing. Try this for yourself– first, hold your shoulders perfectly level with each other and then swing yourarms, then allow your ball side shoulder to relax. In the latter position, you willfeel the increased range of motion. This also allows you to move your headslightly toward the ball side, which makes it easier to line up your head over yourball-side foot, and start to create a swing path where the ball stays under yourhead during the swing. Many people make too much of an effort to keep the upper body very rigid, which inhibits freedom of movement. Relax the upper body – think of keepingeverything from the belt-line up relaxed. While you want to keep the alignmentof the upper body in the proper position you do not need to exert much effort todo so.Align the ball over your ball-side foot to set up your swing plane. If you getyour head over your ball-side foot and get the ball under your head, you will bein a good starting position. Good alignment at the start of the swing is critical tomaking a good swing. Since you want the swing to be under your head duringthe swing, it only makes sense to get your body set up to make this process easier.By using this alignment technique, you set your body up for a swing thatwill promote consistent direction.Your upper body needs to be part of an athletic pose in the stance. You needa slight forward tilt to your spine – about 10-15 degrees relative to standing perfectlystraight. This makes it much easier to move your body forward as youstart the swing without any dramatic weight shifts.Establish the direction of the swing in your stance. Draw a line through yourbreak point all the way to the end of the lane, then align your shoulders and hipsto this line. Establish this line at the start of the swing so that you can finish yourswing aligned on this same target path. Even when your shoulders open andclose during the swing, your swing should still finish pointing down this targetline.Get the swing started soft and quickly – make it work as you take the first ofyour four last steps (your first in a four-step swing). This is a really commonmistake that even some advanced players (myself included) still fight. Gettingthe swing started quickly in a nice, rounded move creates good flow and willhelp you get the body started in harmony with the ball. The smoother you get theball started, and the more in time it is with your steps, the easier it is to swing theball. It will feel like your body and the ball are working as one to get you to therelease point.Keep the shoulder movement minimal on the takeaway step to keep yourupper body from “getting away” from you at the start of the swing. If the shouldersover-rotate (forward) at the start of the swing, it will be hard to get yourbody back into a good position as the ball gets to the top of the back swing, which tends to make the ball go too steeply into the down swing. The shoulderswill move forward during the swing, but slowly and consistently, not quickly.Allow the arm to swing free – feel the ball literally drop into the downswingto create natural momentum and a consistent swing. The more you allow the ballto take your arm into the backswing, the more consistent your armswing will be.A swing fed by gravity and allowed to create momentum by using the weight ofthe ball to propel your body forward will be easy to repeat. Remember, swingingthe ball consistently is what gets you to the title!Swing the ball under your head to increase your accuracy and consistency. When you start the takeaway step, crossing that step in front of the other footwill allow you to swing the ball directly under your head. This will allow you tokeep the swing in line close to your body and still be able to swing the ball to theoutside of the lane when you need to.These are some of the more important, but not all of the most common thingsyou need to look for in good upper body mechanics in your swing. Remember, itis mostly about a proper overall body position, and not about power or force tomake a good swing. Get your upper body in the right position and keep it relaxedand you will make more consistent shots! As always, if you’d like to see a specific topic discussed, e-mail me atproshop@denverbowling.com.Mike Dias is a USBC Silver-Certified Coach and a PBA Regional Champion. Colorado Bowler News Page 5Wayne StellickStaff WriterWe are now over twomonths into thetraditional bowlingseason and bowlingtrends should be developed bybowlers. Now is the time to lookback at your performance for thefirst 25% of the year and analyzewhether you are meeting yourbowling expectations or not. If so, congratulations onyour success, keep it up. If not, here are some steps tohelp you get back on track. To start, take an honest look at your performance. Are there areas in which you are satisfied, or evenpleased with your performance? If so, keep a positivemind set concerning those areas. Congratulate yourselfevery time you meet or exceed your expectations in thoseareas. For example, if you make 8 out of 8 ten pinspares in a night, be proud and confident of that fact.Next, look at the areas in which you wish you were performingbetter. Write them down and make a plan ofaction to improve them. Remember, be honest and don’tlet your own personal beliefs and comfort affect yourcriticisms. Let me provide you with a few examples toget you started.Looking back at my own bowling year thus far, I amfairly happy with my league performance and not sohappy with my tournament performances. I will addresstournament bowling next month. For November, I willlook at what I have seen bowling leagues and coaching. For myself, I started the season bowling in a new centerfor league and didn’t know what to expect. After a roughfirst night in which the ball seemed to hook about 20 feetdown the lane, I knew something different had to bedone. I felt I was rolling the ball fairly well, so I thenlooked at my equipment and lane play options so I couldpossibly have more success. First, I looked at my equipmentfor something that would go down the lane muchfarther. This simple adjustment worked wonders andallowed me to reach moderate success on the lanes. NowI look forward to league again rather than dreading it likeI did after the first night. Each week, I also look for additionalways to improve and I am constantly tryingslightly different lines on the lane to see what works best. After all, are you happy if you don’t improve or do youconstantly look to get better? While this may have been a simple adjustment onmy part, I see many others unwilling or unable to look attheir performances and try to change for the better. Likeeveryone else, I too have a favorite bowling ball that Igenerally start league with. However, you must be willingto put that ball away and try others from time to time.Just because you have the biggest, baddest ball produced,it doesn’t guarantee that it is the best ball for the conditionsyou are bowling on. I have seen many bowlersbring 4 or even 6 bowling balls into their league sessionand they are all the biggest hooking balls produced. While this may make your pro shop happy, it will nothelp your scoring. The same is true with other aspects of the sport.Don’t be afraid to try a different line or different release.Do you really care how good you look throwing the ball?I think it looks a whole lot better to be able to shoot 200games, no matter how you get there, compared withlooking good and comfortable, and shooting 160’s. Ihave coached many bowlers that say they “stand near thecenter dot and throw the ball towards the second arrowwith a big snap on the back end of the lane”. When Isuggest they try a different ball or line, they sometimesmeet me with resistance because that method has“worked” for the past 20 years and they are content averaging178. The same is true when working in the proshop. When you ask someone what they would like theirnew ball to do, you always get the same answer: “go longand then snap hard on the back end”. If all of your bowlingballs are drilled like this, what will you do if the lanesare drier or slicker than the typical house shot? Those that have an open mind and a willingness toimprove, will. One of the best methods of improving isto have a positive outlook and be open when you arebowling on league or in a tournament. If “your” shot isnot working, don’t go home upset because the shot wasnot suited for your game. MOVE. Try new releases andequipment you normally would not. You might be surprisedas to the outcome. Also, watch other bowlers thatare having success and do what you can to mimic theirsuccess. No matter how difficult the shot is, there is alwaysan opportunity to improve. After all, there is AL-WAYS a winner in a tournament.Wayne Stellick M.Ed.PBA Member; BPAA Member; USBC Silver Certified Coach;Former Collegiate All-American (CSU)Owner of Bowling Unlimited – Bowling Marketing / Coaching

Page 8Colorado Bowler NewsIrealized the other day, spurred on by the factthat this column was dueto go to the ColoradoBowler’s editor and I didn’thave a clue what to write about, that I have spent a goodportion of my coaching career dealing with habits.“Habits, yeah,” I thought, out of desperation. “I canwrite about them.”This being a bowling newspaper, I suppose I shouldlimit myself to whatever is relevant to the sport of bowling, but I remember coaching Little League baseball andsaying “Keep your eye on the ball,” “When you make arelay throw, always pivot toward your glove side,” and “Idon’t care what the major leaguers do, catch the ball withTWO HANDS!”In the grand scheme of things, those bad baseballhabits probably don’t matter. Most kids don’t play baseballbeyond Little League, so the most likely result issome dad sitting on the couch and telling his son, “Yousee how Soriano catches that ball with one hand? That’sthe way I used to do it!” If a ball player is skilled enoughand lucky enough to play professionally, they are probablySTILL catching the ball with one hand and the multimilliondollar contract they signed effectively wiped outany recollection of my sage advice on the proper way tocatch the ball.Of course, all of us have habits. Some are goodlookboth ways before crossing a street- some are bad- “Apack of cigarettes a day won’t hurt-“ and some are neutral- the face on my Charlie Brown dinner plate HAS to beright side up when I set the table. (The latter representsthe opinion of the family; personally, I would suspect thatputting Charlie Brown upside down to cause a serious riftin the space-time continuum.Poker players make a living reading people’s faces, and expressions are just a habitual reaction to a set ofcircumstances. For instance, my big ol’ grin when I havefour aces may tell my poker-playing opponent something.I lose a lot; I’m not sure why.As a bowling coach, I often deal with “reengineeringa bowler’s game.” That’s the politically correct spin onBy Roger Thomas“fixing a flaw.” Especially for the kids, you always wantto emphasize the positive, not only for their sake, but foryours. After all, coaching kids is one way you can gethugs, even if you don’t really deserve them. It’s best to help youth bowlers develop good habitsthatis, a fundamentally sound physical game- early on. Ifyou wait until they are teenagers, you end up with twoproblems:1) Their bad habits have become ingrained, and2) They are convinced they know it all, and you, asan adult, have so little brain power you need to bereminded to breathe.Adults are sometimes more coachable, but by thenthey have had their bad habits for a REALLY long time.A lot of bad bowling habits result from a lack ofcoaching, or bad coaching. I sometimes think there’s adad out there who’s about 400 years old and has beengiving bad advice to kids for at least that long.Of course, some bad habits are the result of a poordecision that accidentally had a good result, as in:“I balanced on one foot, ran toward the foul line, leaped in the air, and got a strike. I guess that’s the rightway to do it.”Do you remember the old “conjugating verbs” jokes? They were takeoffs on the “I am, you are, he/she/it is”verb recitations in elementary school. I don’t rememberthe jokes, either, except for one:“I am tenacious, you are stubborn, he is pig headed.”You get the idea. So I invented one for habits:“I have a routine, you have a bad habit, he has behaviorpatterns that seriously need professional help.”With that as our guide, let’s look at the averageleague bowler.I wipe my ball off exactly six times. I do this notonly to clean the ball after my last delivery, but as an integralpart of my pre-shot preparation- a fundamentalingredient to a sound mental game. You wipe off yourball exactly six times. You are taking too long to bowl.He wipes his ball off six times. He not only is taking toolong to bowl, he is slowing down the bowlers on adjacentlanes, and I really don’t like the distraction of his stupid, oily red towel waving around.I pump my fist and holler after every strike, as a wayof blowing off steam and keeping calm and focused. Youpump your fist and holler; you are a showoff. He pumpshis fist and hollers; he is a distraction and likely a dangerto bowlers on the adjacent lanes.I don’t interact with my fellow league bowlers, becauseI am maintaining my focus and mentally preparingfor my next shot. You just sit there; you aren’t much fun.He just sits there; he is a stuck-up snob who thinks he’sbetter than the rest of us.I tell my fellow bowlers what they are doing wrong, because I want them to bowl their best during competition. You tell your fellow bowlers what they are doingwrong; you are an annoying know-it-all. He tells fellowbowlers what they are doing wrong; how DARE he tellme I’m WRONG!I make thoughtful and insightful comments about thelane conditions. You complain about lane conditions toomuch. He just needs an excuse to explain away his miserablebowling.I have completed a well written and witty bowlingcolumn. I got you to read this far (ha ha). I don’t thinkhe can read at all.By the way, I don’t really do those things I mentioned, except for wiping my ball six times. And, ofcourse, what I gave as my reason for doing it is absolutelycorrect.I also probably smile when I’m dealt four aces inpoker, because I get a good hand so seldom. I a greatplayer who is unlucky, you are just lucky, he must becheating.- Roger ThomasRoger has been bowling for over 40 years. Page 10Colorado Bowler NewsIf Technology Has ChangedThe World Of Bowling SoDrastically In The Past 50Years, Why Shouldn't AveragesDuring The 2009-10Season Be 30 Pins Higher Than In 1960? FredBorden Reviews The Improvements And ExplainsWhy He Estimates That Averages ForSkilled Players Should Be Much HigherDick EvansContributing WriterIt is amazing to consider how technology has changed theworld since the early 1960s when only highly skilled bowlerscould average 200.Consider a few of the ways the world has changed in the past50 years. The printing world has gone from hot to cold type and fromtypewriters to computers.TV has gone from depending on rabbit ears for erratic receptionto cable wires for great reception.Telephones have gone from the old dial phones at home or inthe office to cell phones that you carry in your purse or in a pocket.Western Union has been replaced by the Internet.Prop planes for the traveling public have been replaced by jetsthat fly almost twice as fast.Satellites circling above the earth have replaced ships at seaon reporting approaching hurricanes.Basketball has added the three point shot and the shot clock inhopes of producing higher scoring and closer games.Tennis has allowed larger racquets so instead of only one manbeing able to hit a serve 100 miles per hour, it is now common for10 to 20 women players to be able to smash 110 mph serves. Before the new line of golf drivers was introduced, only oneor two power pros could hit 300 yard drives and now more than 20can surpass 300 yards on a regular basis..After track officials decided to allow pole vaulters to changefrom the old bamboo poles to fiberglass poles, the record heightsteadily climbed from 16 feet to almost 20 feet and the record hasbeen broken by almost 60 pole vaulters. It baffles me why some people in bowling are opposed tohigher scoring when virtually every thing in life and the world haschanged so drastically in the past 50 years..Every sport I know understands that if athletes are not improvingthen the sport is going backwards and could be headed foroblivion. I think the sport of bowling would be the laughing stockof the sports world if today's modern technology had not made itpossible for today's skilled bowlers to be 20 times better than theelite bowlers in 1960.So, in 2004, I decided to test my belief by asking probably theworld's greatest expert to compare the technological advancesmade in bowling over the past 50 years and how they should impactaverages in his estimation.I believe that Fred Borden is the foremost authority on allaspects of bowling because of his extraordinary history as a coach/proprietor/author/bowler and his expertise when it comes to today’smodern bowling balls since he also has been involved in themanufacturing end of high-tech balls.I asked him to consider all facets about how bowling hasimproved since the 1960s and to figure out how much each aspectof the many technological improvements should improve the averageof a highly skilled league bowling. Here are his answers:BOWLING BALLS: “The balls are much better– probablythe biggest improvement in our sport. It is much like golfclubs, golf balls, tennis racquets progress. It is free enterprisedoing what it does best.“Modern bowling balls should add 10 pins to a good bowler’saverage.”BOWLING LANES: “The bowling lanes, because of oil stayingon top of the smooth surface, is a vast improvement overthe old wood lanes with lacquer finish that was in constantflux all year. Add another five to eight pins to today’s bowleraverage.”LANE MACHINES: “The new lane machines not only oil butalso clean strip the lanes every day. In the 60s and 70s. westripped very seldom. Therefore we had skid on the front, rotation in the mids and roll on the back, or the last 15 feetevery day we played. This is one of the biggest changes in oursport and should add six pins to an average.”BOWLING SHOES: “The modern bowling shoes do notmake you a high average bowler, but enable you to bowl yourhighest at each and every center or on any approach you playon. A good smooth slide and proper balance is what allows abowler to play their best.”BALL KNOWLEGE/DRILLING TECHNIQUES: “Thechanges in bowling ball knowledge is a great advantage forthose who know how to read the lanes and understand thedifferent layouts and coverstock of equipment. This is a smallpercentage but can be a huge advantage over someone whohas not studied modern technology. Add eight pins if knowledgeable.”BOWLING PINS: “The pins are definitely more active withthe plastic covers and the match up to the bowling balls and5,6,7 degree of angle of entry to the pocket makes for a higherstrike percentage and should be worth four pins.COACHING: “Coaching has improved at the collegiate leveland at the local level, but only to those who seek help. Thereare too many who bowl that never received any coaching. Therefore, it has helped a small percentage, but could help allthat receive coaching. “He gave no point total for coaching since he feels only a smallpercentage of bowlers seek professional coaching help. But Fred Borden did end his remarks by saying that today’smodern technology and information should be worth another “33to 36" pins to a savvy and talented bowler’s league average. In other words, if a bowler could average 200 in 1960, hisclone today should be able to average between 233 to 236...allfactors being equal. And remember, I asked him those questions five years agoand technology has changed even more drastically since 2004.I don't think it is fair to be critical of today's high averageswithout tracing what happened to scoring in the ABC and WIBCNational tournaments since their inaugural events to 1960.So I decided to look into the record book to see scoring trendsduring the first 50 plus years of the WIBC and ABC National tournaments. It took only a 648 score to win the singles title in the firstABC tournament in 1901. It took another nine years before the first700 series was bowled. The second winning 700 singles set wasn'trecorded until 1915 and the third wasn't carded until 1918.I wonder if purist writers in that era started attacking highscores after 1918 since from then on it always took at least a 700to win the ABC singles title. Now let’s look at the scoring trends at the WIBC nationaltournament. It only took a 486 score to win the first WIBC Nationalssingles title in 1916 but only 40 bowlers competed on six lanesduring the two-day tournament in St. Louis' Washington RecreationParlor. The first 600 was bowled in the 1922 WIBC Nationals andthe first 700 in 1934. It took another 22 years before anotherwoman bowled a 700 (1956) and then another 16 years (1972)before a third 700 was recorded. After that winning 700 series came rapidly in the growingWIBC National Tournament. What the ABC/WIBC singles scores show before 1960 is thatthe sport was more difficult, but that was true of all sports beforeso many technological advances were introduced.Unlike most bowling writers, I think high scores reflect wellon the modernized sport of bowling and firmly believe they wouldnot be an image problem if there was no ceiling on scoring abilityand I firmly believe despite my critics that some sort of rule adjustmentshould be made so all scoring records should be able to bebroken. My belief that high scores can produce publicity were reenforcedrecently when the Daytona Beach News-Journal, a dailynewspaper with a circulation of about 110,000, ran a bowling storyon its front sports page, which is a rarity. It was placed on the front sports page because the sports editorwas impressed with the fact that two high school bowlershad bowled 300 games on the same day but for different highschool teams in different bowling centers. When I went to play tennis that morning, everybody at theclub wanted to talk about two high school boys rolling perfectgames on the same day. They were amazed and impressed because most of them hadbeen bowlers earlier in their lives and still were impressed by a 300game.Fortunately their opinions had not been jaded by writershinting that bowling lacked a solid governing body and theintegrity of the sport had been tarnished.Even if you recognize the Heisman name in college football, you may not know that once his Georgia Tech team won a gameby a 220-0 score. The lopsided score made headlines all over thecountry.Running up the score did not tarnish his name or image.I know first hand what high scores can do for a bowlingwriter at a daily newspaper. During one of the years The MiamiHerald sent me to cover the Firestone Tournament of Championsin Akron, I was down in the dumps because the sports editor hadtold me earlier in the evening that he saved only 10 inches formy TofC story and it was going to be run on page eight of thesports section.About an hour later, Gary Dickinson beat Mark Roth, 300-299, during match-game competition and I called the sports editorback and told him about the exciting match and he said, for such afantastic duel he would reserve 12 inches on the front sports pagefor my story and would jump another 10 inches of my story topage eight. So I advocate high scoring during bowling tournaments I amcovering just like I would rather write about a football game thatended with a 35-21 score versus one that ended 10-3.Unlike many bowling writers, I made a living for 40 yearsbeing a sports writer for The Miami Herald. Before big boxing or bowling or tennis or football or basketballor baseball or horse racing events, people often would ask mewho or what team I wanted to win.I had a stock answer: "I want a lot of scoring and action and Iwant the champion to be the one who will give me the bestquotes." Of course, in horse racing that meant the winning jockeyand trainer. If I got all those ingredients, then I was confident I couldwrite an interesting story that would draw strong readership andhopefully a pat on the back from my boss and a raise next year.In case you don't know, they don't allow any cheering in pressboxes across America.I once covered an Orange Bowl Classic game in the OrangeBowl and there was no fear of any cheering even by the spectatorsbecause Tennessee won by a 3-0 score and the Vols' coach hadhis team punting on third down after the Vols kicked a field goal inthe second half. This was also a first that in a combined (Masters andClassic) tournament that the four semi-finalists were all from the Masters Division. Out of those four, wehad three Springs bowlers whom were: James Hart; Chris Helton; CJ Carmien; and Jason from DenverAfter speaking with Nick, I could tell that he was excited about being here and was very impressedwith the staff of Peak Bowl and the turnout of Springs bowlers. Roger Hopper, the Manager of PeakBowl for the last 5 years, and the rest of the staff went out of their way to ensure that the ABT felt athome according to Nick. The eventual winner of the tournament who out bowled CJ Carmien was James Hart. This wasJames' first win and he has only been with the ABT for four months. James lives in Cripple Creek andbowls at Brunswick Zone Circle Lanes on Monday nights. He is married to Kira and has threekids. James has been bowling for 16 years and is 30 years old and, like this writer, has never bowled in aYouth League. All three Springs bowlers that made the finals are friends of mine and James Hart was on my NationalsTeam in Las Vegas, NV in 2009 and bowled doubles with Herb Walsh. They both will be bowlingwith me again in 2010. Chris Helton will also be joining the team in 2010.This was a big payday for James as he won$2290.00 and the second place finisher, CJ Carmien, won$930.00. CJ has been with the ABT for 2 1/2 years. On November 7th and 8th the ABT will be back intown at King Pin Lanes and if you want to have fun and winmoney do come on down and give it a try.I know that James, Chris, and CJ would like tothank me for showing them the line. As they all have saidmany times, we watch Randy bowl then we play an oppositeline and the rest is history!
