Industry News - Technology 6 Ameco Beijing becomes first Chinese company to install in-flight WLAN Ameco Beijing became the first company in China to install in-flight WLAN when it added the service to an Air China Boeing 737-800 last week, making Air China the first carrier in China to provide WLAN services. Thanks to a Chinese Civic Aviation modification design approval (MDA), Ameco Beijing was able to install the server in the cabin, providing passengers with more entertainment options accessible via WLAN through portable devices. Installing in-flight WLAN on an Air China Boeing 737-800 Ameco Beijing • Lufthansa Technik and partners successfully tested a new ‘green-taxiing’ system for ground operations: electric motors installed on the main landing gear of an Airbus A320 aircraft took over all necessary movements of an aircraft on ground. The system integrates electric wheel drives into the main landing gear to propel the aircraft during ground operations. The wheel-drive technology leverages its industryleading electric motors’ continuous torque and power density to propel the aircraft. L-3 Communications, Fraport and sister companies Lufthansa and Lufthansa Technik, with Airbus support, teamed up to jointly test the technology demonstrator which could lead to a new system for aircraft taxiing. • Qatar Airways will be the launch customer for Boeing’s new Electronic Flight Folder (EFF). The carrier will install the EFF on their entire fleet of Boeing 777s starting in 2012, making it the first in the world to transmit day-of-flight data such as flight plans and weather information directly to the 777 Class 3 Electronic Flight Bag (EFB). Qatar Airways will also install the Electronic Flight Folder on their future Boeing 787 fleet, making it the first airline to deploy such advanced operational software on both models. • Monarch Airlines selected Goodrich Corporation to provide SmartDisplay Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) for its Airbus A300, A320, A321 and A330 aircraft. Monarch has completed initial installation of the system on an A321 and conducted a successful twomonth in-service demonstration period. SmartDisplay EFBs will be rolled-out across the Airlines’ remaining Airbus fleet with planned retrofit completion by the second quarter 2012. Goodrich’s Sensors and Integrated Systems team in Burnsville, Minn. is producing the systems and performing integration activities. Goodrich will also provide two Goodrich SmartDisplay EFB units, ARINC 828-compliant aircraft interface devices and Carlisle Interconnect Technologies EZMount display mounts and installation kits for each aircraft. This advanced EFB portfolio, known as Goodrich’s cockpit data management system, provides extensive connectivity to aircraft data networks and systems, allowing Monarch to maximize EFB utility and the associated operational savings. • SR Technics and Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies (ADAT), both part of Mubadala Aerospace’s global MRO network, signed a contract with Airbus for the implementation of the Airbus Managed Inventory (AMI) service at the Dubai Airshow.
