Asthe granddaughter of America’s greatestauthor, Ernest Hemingway, Lorianhas done more than any other familymember to keep the Hemingway nameone of the most respected names inliterature. She actually started theannual short story contest herself 32years ago, and with over 1,600 entriesfrom all over the world last year, andhopefully as many this year, the contesthas become one of the largest in theworld. And part of that magic has beenhere at Casa Antigua, the site of theaward-winning event for 17 years now.In my travels and readings over theyears, I have discovered that there aredistinct locations around the world thatfor whatever reason have harnessedpositive energy throughout the years, manifested in amazing things happeningat the sites. I suggest that “Casa Antigua,”my family home, may be one of them.Let’s go back to 1830, when JosephBrown, the first mayor of Key West, builthis mayoral mansion on the site. Hehosted Confederate President JeffersonDavis after he was released from UnionPrison following the Civil War. Davidrecuperated right here. Joseph Brown’sson, Jefferson Beale Brown, who wouldlater become a judge and congressman, wrote the first definitive history of KeyWest in his book, “Key West The OldAnd The New.”Around the turn of the century, entrepreneurs Benjamin Trevor andGeorge Morrison bought the propertyand built a 46-unit hotel called “TheTrevMor” using their combined lastnames, which featured the island’s firstcar dealership on the hotel’s first floor. This is basically the same building thatis here today, and has been my familyhome for the past 35 years. Trevor andMorrison put the car dealership in afterthe turn of the century when Key Westwas America’s first city of millionaires, following the success of the shipwreckindustry in the 1800’s. They knew everymillionaire would want to buy a car, andthey were right.Fast-forward twenty some odd yearslater to 1928. Ernest Hemingway andhis wife, Pauline, had been in Paris sevenyears and had grown tired of the coldParisian winters. Besides, Pauline waspregnant, and they wanted to have theirchild in the states. So they returnedto America via a luxury steamshipand stopped in Key West to warm up.Pauline’s Uncle Gustavo bought them anew Ford to welcome the couple home. They got off the ship at the docks atMallory and came to the TrevMor to gettheir car. The dealers explained that thecar was not delivered yet, but offeredHemingway and his wife a secondfloor room facing the Gulf until the cararrived.Luckily for Key West, it took sixweeks for that car to finally arrive. In themeantime, Hemingway found SloppyJoes a couple of blocks down, met hissparring partner, Shine Forbes, wentdeep sea fishing, enjoyed five coursemeals at Delmonico’s for 45 cents, andfell in love with the quaint little islandand decided to call it home. He wasalso able to finish writing his semiautobiographicalnovel, “A Farewell ToArms,” while living here at the TrevMor.Word spread around the world thatAmerica’s top author had settled inKey West and was relishing the tropicalambiance. Authors, playwrights (likeTennessee Williams), artists, sculptors, and songwriters flocked to Key West inthe years that followed to soak up somethe tropical inspired creativity. Key Westwent on to become a recognized artcolony. In addition, as a result of thisartistic influx, the gay community heregrew. Hemingway had no idea of thecultural explosion he caused in the yearsthat followed him.Today the island still plays home tomany top writers and playwrights likeTerrence McNally. Songwriters still comein droves for the annual songwriter’sfestival. And yes, there are still poets. For me, Casa Antigua gave birth tomy political career of six years, winningmy first race ever, and then my second. This quest for positive energy led to mystarting Conch Color over five and ahalf years ago, just to show the world allthe good things that go on in the FloridaKeys. I also tried to restore Conch prideamong the residents, and show throughthe children what an amazing place thisis to grow up. So for me the positiveenergy in my family home is still aliveand well. Thank you, Casa Antigua! On Friday night, July 20th, I inviteeveryone to come experience the literarymagic of Lorian Hemingway’s annualshort story event. Father John Baker willannounce the winners and actor/oratorGeorge Murphy will read the winningentry. Come feel the history and thepositive energy I often talk about. You’llbe glad you did.TOM OOSTERHOUDTeditor&publisher

New FKCC President Jonathan GueverraArticle by Nick Wright and Photo by Tom OosterhoudDr. Jonathan Gueverra, the newpresident of Florida Keys CommunityCollege, has yet to unpack theboxes of books in his new office, buthas already set his personal agendafor the coming months: To listen toand connect with the faculty, staffand community of the Florida Keys.“It starts with listening,” says Dr.Gueverra, settling comfortably intohis new office on College Road, “andif you listen carefully – to instructors, staff, businesses, leaders, and all others- interconnections emerge; thesepatterns help form our objectives as acollege and as a community.”This desire to hear from others hasdistinguished Gueverra in positionsacross New England, New Yorkand Washington D.C., but also- herecounts comically- has created acouple of amusing moments. In hisprevious position as Chief ExecutiveOfficer of the Community Collegeof D.C., Gueverra set up a “ListeningTour” to learn from those in thearea. At the appropriate time in anevent resembling a “Meet & Greet,”he made his way to the front of theroom, introduced himself, and addressedthe assembly. “I said, ‘I’mhere tonight specifically to listento what you have to say...’ and thenthere was an awkward moment thatseemed to go on forever. People’sfaces went blank; everyone expectedme to continue. I had to interject andsay ‘No, really! I’m not here to talk,I’m here to listen to you!’”While his primary focus may beto listen, Gueverra has no troubleconversing on a wide range of topicsand activities. Yet while conversationmay center upon sports, music, family, gardening or travel, an interconnectionwith education can always beuncovered.“I enjoyed coaching the youngergirls when my oldest daughter, Joy,was playing soccer,” says the formersemi-professional footballer fromTrinidad & Tobago. “I thought itimportant to instruct the girls on thefundamentals of the game at an earlyage. It is imperative to form goodhabits – not only in soccer, but inlife. The old maxim says ‘old habitsdie hard,’ but I believe that is false.Old habits don’t die! You have to killthem!”Likewise, Gueverra injects instructioninto further aspects of hisworld. An accomplished gardener, hehas often used plants as a classroommetaphor for the unique nature ofeach student, and the meticulouscultivation that must occur to ensurea lifetime of success. Similarly, giftsfrom friends in foreign lands – India,Australia and the African Continent– adorn his walls as goals to goad himto go places he has always longed tovisit. As he considers spinning a vinylversion of Count Basie Blues on hisoffice record player, the new FKCCPresident emphasizes the importanceof finding essential connections.“My students were shocked oneyear when I referenced Tupac Shakurin a lesson,” recounts the educatorof a time in the classroom, “but it isessential to connect to the students’interests and knowledge base. Withouta connection, there is no communication.”While students, and much of thecollege faculty and staff prepare tojoin Gueverra on campus in Augustfor the fall semester, all can be surethat their leader is ready to listen andconnect. “Florida Keys CommunityCollege is integral to the Florida Keyscommunity, “says Gueverra. “Inmany respects we know what has tobe accomplished. Now it is time tolisten, work together, find connectionsand patterns, and develop ourplans to move forward, as a collegeand a community.”conch color the florida keys 8 photographic chronicle

Stay away angry people as much aspossible.Taurus: If the answers you are getting changethe questions you have asked they are notworkable conclusions. Don’t listen to anyonewho tries to convince you otherwise. You havedecided to follow through on certain aspectsof a plan and you have laid out the perimetersand set the goals as well as the people who areto be involved remember why you did this.Gemini: A certain amount of restraint andthoughtful consideration much as in the gameof chess and its strategy is needed now to helpyou in not only matters of the heart but increative endeavor passionate responses andsome ones offer to financially back you or takecare of all of your needs make sure that thereare guide lines set before you agree to anythingand please above all get the details in writing sothat you don’t become dependent on anyone.Cancer: If you do not pay attention to how youexpress yourself or keep your words in orderwhen expressing them to people in positionsof authority you can cause yourself a lot oftrouble and pain especially in dealing withpossessions that are jointly held. Remembermight does not make right and the smallestdetails will have to be accountable. Make sureyour paperwork is in order before you start theprocess it will be a paper trail that wins out.Leo: It does you absolutely no good to keep allof your actions under control when a partneror significant other is broadcasting all of yoursecrets, clear the air here if in no other way bysaying nothing and answering no questions. You do not have to defend any statement thatsomeone else makes or deny it for that matterand the less you engage the better off you willbe don’t sign anything and explain nothingwithout legal representation.Virgo: Go on admit it you are angry thething that you must figure out is exactly whoit is that you are angry with and why. Thistime of testing is at its critical degree and thelesson is clear. Are you going to wait aroundfor the ship to sink with you on it or are yougoing to really figure out what is best for youpersonally without anyone else involved andmake a personal choice by opening the door ofopportunity and walking through it for once.Libra: For a little longer than eight monthsnow you have been procrastinating on makingsome changes that are personally, businessand relationship oriented, this concerns howyou handle each of these situations. It is yourchoices that are in question here no one else’sand also your expectations that are what causesyou pain get clear on this and your next stepwill be obvious. When you decide to be happyyou will be.Scorpio: You have so many things that youwant to do and the creative juices are flowing. There does not seem to be enough hours inthe day to finish your ‘to do’ lists and this isbecause you keep adding things. This will giveyou a fine sense of accomplishment.Sagittarius: Sometimes it is very importantthat you guard your creative brain childrenuntil you have made them safe. You need tobe aware of this. The things that you are doingnow have reached a critical degree and withjust a little more work you can strike gold inseveral areas that is if you don’t let the cat outof the bag too soon. Sometimes it is necessaryto be a little discrete about what you are doinguntil you are ready to unveil publically.Capricorn: You must choose your battlescarefully now and do not allow yourself togo off half cocked especially on things thathave little to do with what you are tryingto accomplish and everything to do withthe “Little” ego which is not a long termconsideration. Try to smooth over some of thefeathers you have ruffled that are importantto the success of your project. Sometimes thebest way to do this is to listen and say nothing.Aquarius: If you didn’t sign on the dotted linewhen you had the opportunity you may havelost your chance at least for the moment if thisis the case take this time to do some researchon exactly why you were hesitant in the firstplace and you just may find that you havesaved your self considerably in the long run bynot acting on impulse. Negotiate better nexttime.Pisces: You cannot afford to gamble if youcannot afford to lose. Repeat this to yourself.Do not be tempted to just do it in little ways itis those little holes in the bottom of the boatthat eats away the interior and inevitably sinksit.
