As mostof you now know, last summer, outof the clear blue, my spine collapsedand the neurosurgeons threw me inthe hospital for an emergency eighthour operation in which my heartstopped and my kidneys failed. Theyreplaced my spine, L-1 through L-5,with a titanium rod. While my newspine feels okay, except where it sits onmy sacrum, my heart and kidneys didsnap back a month out of the hospital.I was so grateful to have escapeddying. But my road to recoverycontinues.I have undergone intensephysical therapy in my six months outof the hospital. Initially I felt no pain,as my wounds from the operationwere so numb. But then about Christmas, my nervesin my sacrum area started growingback, leading often to unbearablepain. I am not able to lay flat or sit toolong as a result. And I hate taking painkillers in the daytime because theymake me crazy. The cause of my spinalcollapse was my acute stenosis, whichhad in effect, strangled my spinalcord, and caused periodic paralysisin my legs, and eventually totallyimmobilizing my lower legs and feet.My lower legs and feet cannot flex ormove, but are still very sensitive to thetouch. That is, I can still feel it if theyare stuck with a pin. It’s the nervesthat control the movement that havestopped working. I wear plastic splintson my feet and lower legs which helpgive me the strength to walk for thetime being. My other resulting problemis my extremely limited energy level. Inow require several naps throughoutthe day because I burn out so quickly. Before my operation, I don’t think Ihad ever taken a nap in my life. Thisis extremely problematic with myTOM OOSTERHOUDTeditor&publisherworkaholic lifestyle.I am now taking a prototypeprescription med call Lyrica, which ishelping to re-activate the nerves in mylower legs and feet. It tends to makeme sleep longer at night and be sleepyduring the day. But I do notice newfeelings in my feet from this drug. The doctors have told me thatmy recovery period will last at least ayear, and now with six months behindme since the operation, I am bored totears with my limitations. Before theoperation I used to ride my bicycleten miles a day resulting in strong calfmuscles in legs, but not any more! Iam so restless and ready to do a 5 K.I want to thank Dr. RobertCatana for so patiently watching overme in this time of duress. His insightinto my situation has been remarkable.Being a workaholic with limitationshas been maddening for me, and Dr.Catana and his staff, have truly beenthere for me. I also must thank myphysical therapist, Roger, for his stoicencouragement as he puts me throughthe paces each week.He patiently listens to my complaintsas he keeps me on track.I wrote this piece becauseso many of you ask how I am doingwhenever you see me. Unfortunatelymy progress has been slow, but steady.I do thank all of you for caring, itmakes me truly appreciate my KeyWest family. It has been a major effortto keep Conch Color going, butobviously I love my work as I love mycommunity. You are all so special tome. Many people ask what they cando besides keeping me in their heartsand prayers. I can only ask that thosebusiness owners who can, to advertisewith us as a show of support duringthis trying time. This will help a lotduring my long, long road to recovery.God bless all of you for keeping ConchColor alive and well.conch color the florida keys 4 photographic chronicle

What many of them don’t know is thatthere are a few simple techniques that coulddramatically improve the overall quality of theirphotos. The first and most important techniqueis to not use the on-screen shutter button. Whenyou touch the screen of the phone with yourfinger you move the device which many timeswill knock the image out of focus. Instead, usethe volume + button on the side of the phonewhich acts as a shutter and will allow you tohave better image control. The second technique is to never shootphotos vertically. It might look right at the time, but most images look better if shot horizontally. If you change your mind, you can always crop itlater. Finally, using the rule of thirds willmake any photo look better. When you’re in thephoto app tap on “options” and set “photo grid”to on. This will put what will look like a tic tactoe board over your screen. The trick is to placeyour subject either on one of the lines or preferablyat one of the intersecting points. Happyclicking.David A. Cox is the founder and CEO of TheMac Guru and PCClassesOnline.com. DEATHTRAP CAPTIVATES THE AUDIENCE AT THE WATERFRONT PLAYHOUSEPhotos by Tom OosterhoudtDeathtrap may be the most riveting and spectacular “whodunit” tohit Key West stages in some time now. David Black and Mark Watson provethemselves to be an acting tour de force with incredible stage chemistry that iswell beyond credible. Even their violent scenes seemed real enough to revilethe audience, drawing oohs and ahs. Bobby Bowersox’s meticulous directionleft no room for flaws, and allowed the well written show to flow effortlesslywith such a fast pace it seemed to end in no time at all. Supporting castmembers Mary Falcone, Chris Stone, and Geno Drum were the cream on thecake in this well crafted show. The audience left the theater with a big “wow”on their faces. This is theater at its best.Kneeling are Trish Manley (stage manager) & Danny Weathers (artistic director). Seated isDavid Black (actor) and in back are actors Geno Drum and Mary Falconer, Bob Bowersox(director), actors Mark Watson and Chris Stone, Leigh Hooten (costumes), Michael Boyer (setdesign), Carmen Rodriguez (props) and David Bird (lighting design).Deathtrap earned a standing ovation on opening night, as the Waterfront’s stunning season finale.Danny Weather produced yet another stellar season.Sheryl and Ralph Nackino (winners of the “Flo” Award & the Waterfront’sUnsung Heroes) were announced by the Waterfront’s outgoing president,Christopher Elwell.Michael Boyer created his most amazing set yet for Deathtrap. А.
