My good friend EdwardKnight turns 95 next Thursdayon January 11th, and nothingholds him back. He hosted hisown Christmas party this yearat his Thompson Island estateand personally greeted most ofthe guests at the door. After acouple of hours, he sat down fora moment and looked at me andsaid, “Please excuse me, I got up at6:30 this morning and have beengoing all day”. I thought to myself,“Holy Cow, Ed is one amazingguy. I think he is planning anotherworld cruise soon. Why not?Another inspiration is JeanCarper, who is on our cover thisweek. Jean is the author of 24 bestselling books and turned 80 thisweek. Check out her outfit, sheis dressed to kill, and looks easilyhalf her age. At her party she wasrunning around like crazy withme trying to catch up with her asI took photos. Next thing I knew,Jean was out on her dance floorcutting the rug with professionaldancer Denis Hyland. I doubtJean is finished writing books too. This gal is simply amazing. Then there is our own “AuntieMame”, arts supporter Vera Schiffwho also seems to have found thefountain of youth. Vera is 85 andso alive! At her annual New Year’sDay party this past Sunday, shewent from table to table taking thetime to talk to each of her guestsand let them know that each andevery one was important to her.She was wearing a Mary McFaddendesigner gown that was justbeautiful and elegant. Vera doesTOM OOSTERHOUDTeditor&publishernot miss much around town and Isee her at just about every openingand event. Simply amazing.Earlier this year my old pal,David Wokowski who is 90 droveover to see me at the Conch Coloroffices here, just to make sure Igave the teachers of the year that heselected the appropriate credit andcoverage they deserved for doingsuch a great job educating our kids.David gives his teachers of the year$5,000 awards each year. He meansbusiness! I respect him so muchfor doing this for our community. His mind is ageless!Seventy seems to me nothinganymore. Look at John Wells andJoy Hawkins. Currently they areboth starring in “August: OsageCounty” in which Joy not onlychews up the stage, but gives theperformance of a lifetime. It’s hardto take your eyes off of her with hercaptivating performance. If youever catch one of John’s concerts, you’ll know what I mean when Isay he is a character’s character. Hehas enough charm and charisma tolight up any stage. Watching himwail, “Here comes the Conch Train”is enough to entertain audiencesof any age. These two showbizveterans are truly ageless. There must be something in thisKeys air. Something powerful andmighty good for all these folks todefy their numerical age. The Twin Fill Islands of Key West HarbourAerial Photo by Tom OosterhoudtEditor’s note: Wisteria Islandand its twin, Sunset Key, werecreated by dredge fill whenthe Navy originally dredgedout the harbor during WorldWar II. In 1994, the Walshfamily developed it creatingthe most upscale resort islandin the Florida Keys. The citywas wise enough early onto annex the island, whichnets about $300,000 in taxesa year with no impact. Itssister island, now calledWisteria Island, sits just200 yards away, was alsocreated by dredge fill. TheWalshes would like to developit was, which would be ahuge plus for the local taxbase, at a time when mosthomeowners would love to seetheir millage rates lowered.Sunset Key is a prize jewel inthe crown of Key West, andWisteria Island could be thecame.
