Your Arcana check result determines how many eyes youcan place and what type of vision or sensory ability theypossess.Arcana Check EyesResult Created Vision or Ability9 or lower 1 Normal10–19 2 Normal20–29 3 Darkvision30–39 4 Darkvision40 or higher 5 Darkvision, tremorsense 12The watchful eyes function like those of the Eye of Alarmritual (Player’s Handbook, page 304), except as follows. When the eyes detect an intruder, they sound no audiblealarm, but instead alert you through a telepathic link. Thislink functions regardless of distance, though you mustremain on the same plane. The watchful eye also creates a mild connectionbetween you and the creature that triggered it. “The creaturethat triggered the Sentinel Eye ritual’s watchful eye”is sufficient identification for the Observe Creature ritual(Player’s Handbook, page 309), if you wish to spy on it at alater date using that ritual. You can use the View Locationritual to spy on the location where a triggered creaturewas when the eye was triggered, if you have that ritual, since you obviously know the area in which you performedSentinel Eye. (However, that use has limited utilitygiven the 1 hour performance time of View Location.)The ritual’s effects last for 24 hours.Optional Focus: You can extend the duration of thisritual indefinitely by keeping a focus in the vicinity. Thisritual focus is a small, jeweled eye made of gold and ruby, worth 2,000 gp. The Sentinel Eye lasts as long as thefocus remains within 20 squares of any of the watchfuleyes. You can hide or protect the ritual’s focus in any wayyou like, as long as it remains within range.Ward the True NameA rush of voices flows through your mind, as though youeavesdropped on the whole world at once. Almost immediatelyit fades to a background rustle, as easily ignored asthe trickling of a gentle stream, yet ever ready to leap to theforefront of your mind.Level: 26Component Cost: 22,500 gpCategory: Scrying Market Price: 125,000 gpTime: 8 hoursKey Skill: Arcana (no check)Duration: Permanent until dischargedIf anyone anywhere in the world performs a divination orscrying ritual that is intended to gather information aboutyou—such as someone using Consult Mystic Sages or ConsultOracle to ask questions about you, or using ObserveCreature to spy on you—you instantly become aware ofit. You do not learn the nature of the ritual caster’s questionsor efforts. You learn only the specific ritual that wasperformed. You also gain the ability to identify the ritualcaster well enough to scry upon him or her in turn. The effect of this ritual ends when you have beenalerted to a divination or scrying attempt.DRAGON COMPONENTSThe innately mystical and elemental nature of dragonsgrants them numerous abilities while they live.Sometimes, in specific circumstances, a dragon’sstrength and activities in life can imbue its remainswith residual power that can be tapped with a ritual.Though dragon remains are not normally considereduseful ritual components, explicit situationscan arise in which a portion of a particular dragon’sremains prove useful. For instance, if the blood ofa dragon responsible for killing an individual creatureis consumed as part of the ritual to speak withthat creature’s corpse, the ritual has a better chanceof success. Likewise, the bone from a dragon thatinjured or cursed a creature can be used as part of aritual to restore that creature to health and lift anycurses that creature might suffer because of the dragon’sactions.Dragon remains are not easy to acquire, of course, not only because dragons tend not to want to partwith their organs, but because such remains are difficultto harvest and do not keep well. But sometimes, under specific circumstances, it is worthwhile to try.The characters might not automatically assume that theyshould take special care to dissect a dragon and preserveits organs. Thus, if PCs wish to take from a dragon’sremains a component useful for a ritual, they must succeedon a DC 15 Nature check. If the PCs want to preserve thecomponent for more than two days before using it, theymust also succeed on a DC 25 Arcana check.PCs on a quest might discover that a local “dragonof legend” was slain years ago by another adventurer.HARVESTING AND PRESERVINGBecause the nature of their quest requires them tolearn something of what the dragon knew, they mightdesire to find a portion of that dragon’s remains to seeif anything is salvageable. In such a circumstance, they’lloften be out of luck. However, it could be that parts fromthe named dragon they seek might be available from analchemist who keeps them floating in a jar for curiosity’ssake, and who might be willing to sell them for a relativepittance.86CHAPTER 2 | DM’s Guide to Dragons
