Patrick Lefere’s Changeof Command, commencementceremonies at all three Keys highschools, and Pride Week in Key Westhelping to pack all of our local hotels, motels, and inns. We are one busylittle island at the end of the rainbow.Let’s start with the movingChange of Command ceremonythat attracted a full house at HangarA-936 on Boca Chica Field. The KeyWest community developed a mutualadmiration relationship for both Capt.Patrick Lefere and his wife Wendy. Tosay that they are a warm and adorablecouple is an understatement. Someof us even fell for their charmingchildren. I know every time I orderedan ice cream cone down at Key WestBight, son Sean killed me with a hugewarm smile that I won’t forget. DadPat always took time to shoot thebreeze with me and my assistants atConch Color. Mom Wendy openlyembraced diversity in Key West as shebefriended and often hung out withthe local gay arts crowd. The “boys”all adored her. What more can I say? KeyWest absolutely loved Capt. Lefere andhis family. It was our rather obviousintention to put a bug in their ear afew weeks back when we surprisedthem with our cover. Apparentlyall the right people also noticed, including our School SuperintendentMark Porter, who just hired the nowformer NAS Key West Commander tobe the School District’s new executivedirector of Operations and Planning.Wowser! Congrats on that, Pat! Andhuge thanks to the Superintendent. We were all moved when thehuge crowd gathered at the Changeof Command ceremony last week tobid the good Captain farewell with arousing standing ovation. The lookon his face said it all. It is now myextreme pleasure to be able to say--notjust “Fair Winds and Following Seas”TOM OOSTERHOUDTeditor&publisheras in Naval tradition, but-- welcomeSparky and Wendy. On other fronts this pastweek, we had graduations all up anddown the Keys, and as you can see,Conch Color once again has it all, aswe have been doing for eight yearsnow. I have actually been doing ityearly since 1999.But this year my spine operationprevented me from doing it for thefirst time in all those years, and myamazing assistant, Kristen Livingood, made it happen. It’s quite a jobcapturing all the grads in MonroeCounty in photos, but Kristenmanaged to do it and keep my longstanding tradition alive. Then, Ialso raided Facebook for the collageof grads celebrating just after theircommencement. The spirited photoscapture their glee and the sheerexcitement of the moment. Finally, I once again rode inthe Key West Pride Parade as I havedone as long as I can remember. Thisyear I spiced it up with my own spicegirls, the now celebrated “BlondeMafia”, who are like my sisters. Theyare such a hoot! But the piece deresistance this year was having mynew good buddies and gay parents ofthe year, Caroline Bauer and SharonCzerwinski join us in my car for theparade. They are the celebrated gayparents of this year’s record breakingVal and Sal twins, Liz and Erin. Thegirls became the first sisters to everbecome Val and Sal together in thehistory of Key West High School withGPA’s of over 4.7.Anyway, the proud momsjoined me, my niece Raquel, chiropractor Dr. Liz Morin, and myTV co-host Jenna Stauffer, better knowthese days as the Blonde Mafia. I thinkwe all had a blast in the Pride Parade.Yes, diversity continues to thrive inSouthernmost City. And the goodtimes continue to roll! God bless KeyWest.conch color the florida keys 4 photographic chronicle

Be The Difference That Can ChangeA Lifetime“Becoming a foster parent is easy”“To no longerfeel like acase number, but a specialand lovedhuman beingis a gift thatno one exceptmy fosterfamily couldprovide.”-Foster Child, age 17A safe nurturing and loving home is aright every child deserves. This is especiallytrue for those children who cannotremain in the care of their parents dueto abuse, neglect, abandonment or otherfactors. Because of a shortage of fosterhomes in Monroe County, Wesley HouseFamily Services is looking for interestedparents willing to help a child dealingwith a turbulent time in their younglives. The spectrum is broad. They areyoung children and teenagers or inbetween. Of all races and nationalities;some have medical issues, others withhandicaps. Some have brothers andsisters all experiencing the same unfortunatecircumstance. In the past year, inclusive of providingcase management services to over360 children, Wesley House placed 44children in licensed foster care homes.Unfortunately, in Monroe County, thereare only 14 licensed foster care homesrepresenting 29 beds locally creatinga glaring gap for children in need of acaring family. This shortage sometimesresults in children being placed in fosterhomes outside the community or possibilityof siblings being split up.Foster Parents are unique group, someare married couples, some have otherchildren, some are single and some havechildren of their own who are grown andindependent. Foster parents come frommany diverse backgrounds, lifestyles andincome levels. Wesley House providesthe required training using the PRIDE(Parent Resource for Information, Developmentand Education) curriculum.Used for both foster as well as adoptiveparents, the curriculum consists of nine, three hour classes, held once a week fornine weeks. Participation in the PRIDEtraining course is the biggest step inbecoming a foster parent. Wesley Housewill walk you through the rest. The goal of Wesley House is to create10 more licensed homes within MonroeCounty.Don’t feel you can be a foster parent;there are other ways you can help WesleyHouse and the foster care system.
