This past weekI covered an amazing array of ConchHigh School sports. Baseball seasonstarted. It was great to see Matthew“Chel Chekis, Tommy Ruffenach, andMikie Abreu back on the diamond.I have known them since they werekids. They were hitting that ball outof the park last week.Basketball season ended on a highnote this week as our team made theplayoffs, a major accomplishment fora team who had not seen basketballplayoffs in many years. Tuesday nightthey reached the end of the roadfor this year. But what an excitinghome game against Doral Academylast Thursday! They need to knowhow proud they all made us. Thatnight Coach Anton Lopez had RyanWagner, JeQuan Lopez, and ThomasButler playing like pros. And whatcan I say about Tony Guieb? He maynot have been the tallest player on thecourt, but he sure was the fastest, andran circles around the other players.Wow! What a game!At the track meet midweek, I got tosee Clive Georges wear his other hatand run like greased lightning. AndI got the biggest kick out of watchingthe girls try to high jump and polevault. I burst out laughing, they weretrying so hard. It was nice to meetthe Coral Shores team. Later that day,I got to check out the girls softballteam coached by my cuz, BubbaOsterhoudt. It was good to see mylittle cuz, Devin, Bubba’s daughter, with my other old pal, CarolineTalbott. Then there was my favoritehomecoming queen, Rachel Quad, who always gets me laughing. Thesegals are something else. The next day I was thrilled to get topersonally congratulate our new statewrestling champ, Max Llama. CoachChas told me that he knew Maxwould break out and rise to the top,and this year Max had the confidenceto pull it off. Congrats to St. PierreAnilus too, who came in second in hisweight class. You guys rock! Finally I got to attend this year’sfootball awards banquet last Sundaynight. I have been covering Conchfootball longer than any other sport, and I have to say I have never knownTOM OOSTERHOUDTeditor&publishera coach as well as I have Coach JerryHughes. He spent a long time withme helping to make sure we got allthe awards right in this week’s issue. Thanks Coach Jerry, you are indeeda great friend.I was sort of sad to see so many ofthis year’s top players take their finalbow at the awards banquet. CliveGeorges and Naquan McNeil werealways so exciting to watch on thefield. You knew when they got theball there was a good chance that atouchdown was on the way. Cliveactually got me to gasp sometimeswhen he streaked for the goal line, successfully avoiding tackles. And I know I will miss DevinBarber, one of the most impressivedefensive players that I have everwatched. Devin made up for hissize by getting in the face of theother team like no one I have everwitnessed. To say he was fierce, is anunderstatement. Then there was allof his amazing interceptions. Holycow! Devin, Clive, and Naquanmade so many of this year’s gamesthrilling to watch. The other playerswere great too, but it was these threewho kept me watching and takingphotos from the sidelines everyweek. Last year it was hard to saygoodbye to Clinton McCoy. So Iwill be curious to see who next year’sstars might be.I know it may surprise some ofyou out there that I am such a hugesports fan. But I have been coveringConch sports for over twelve yearsnow and I have watched mostof these amazing students growinto amazing young athletes. Theevolution itself is fascinating. One last item, there are manyhuge Conch sports fans out there, and one of my favorites, JoanneWebster, has spent the past sixmonths getting her kidneys andother things fixed in the hospital. Ihad always admired her front rowcheers at baseball games for yearsnow. There is no bigger Conchsports fan. It was so good to see herback sitting in the front row at lastweek’s baseball games. Joanne, youare loved, and it’s just wonderful tosee you back. For Conch sports, youare often the sunshine on a cloudyday!conch color the florida keys 4 photographic chronicle

A pretty girl....is like amemory; here we haveanother fine group ofpictures brought to meby Tommy Terpening.I thank him for theselocal entertainers ofdays gone by. Theseimages are from a1992/1993 poster oflocal drag queens. Thecalendar was a fundraiserfor Aids HelpGordon Rossand put together by“Tivie”. The $10 calendardid very well as Iremember, and though we have lost many a “goodgirl” since then, a few of our favorites are still withus today. Alma Jean, shown here giving “good leg”can still be seen running around working for JohnMumford and his Details landscaping group. DDTnow lives with his husband in Orlando and is theFood and Beverage Manager at the Boatslip resortin Provincetown during the summer. The“Bride and Mother of the Bride” shotis none other than Helen Bed and PattiCakes....a perfect match both continue tograce our island, Helen at the Oasis andPatti Cakes at Square One (where he makesa vicious martini). “Ma” Evans wore thisoutfit that featured a special place for hercigarettes in the center of her wig. VERYstylish at the time and so wrong in so manyways! “Ma” can be seen at the 801 withthe girls in Sushi’s famous show. Two ofmy favorites are Ms. Mona Celeste, QueenMother IV, DDT, Queen Mother IX andLady “L”, both Queen Mother II ICIONS inthe Queen Mother group and people whosupported our community by giving a hugeamount of fundraising hours raising moneyfor AIDS Help Inc during a time AIDS wasripping apart our town and world. This is agroup of people who gave of their time andenergy to raise funds for our community;they are a very special group indeed.A touching wedding picture of Patty Cakes as the “Mother of theBride” and Helen In Bed as “The Bride”....scary though eh? Canyou imagine the wedding?~ Gift Certificates Available ~Alma Jean definitely gives “good leg” and is still in townworking with Mr. John Munford and his landscapingbusiness Details. The fabulous DDT who never failed to entertainment me with everyshow I ever watched and he is greatly missed here in Key West.Another huge local fundraiser “MaEvans”.
