Within literally a coupleof minutes, out of the clear blue,Ann Scott, Florida’s first lady showedup and offered to help me in. Shegrabbed my hand and could not havebeen more helpful. People often askme why I am so bipartisan. I have toanswer back, “How could I not be?”Not to be outdone, the governor alsocame up and gave me a hug. Geez!I immediately thanked him forhis recent initiatives for educationalfunding and teacher’s raises. I toldhim how happy this made me andhe looked me in the eyes and said,“I know Tom”. He really does have awarm side. I also want to thank hisassistant, Brad Piepenbrink, for hiswarmth and for actually rememberingme. It’s all good. Now let meelaborate on what Gov. Scott did thatmade me smile for all our teachers.Governor Rick Scott and FloridaEducation Association (FEA)President Andy Ford applauded theHouse and the Senate’s agreementto implement $480 million inteacher pay raises. The languageaccompanying the funding allowsdistricts the flexibility to develop theirown performance plans to awardthe greatest number of teachers thelargest teacher pay raise possible, incoordination with their collectivebargaining agreements. The $480million in funding provides enoughto give every teacher a minimum ofa $2,000 pay raise, while also givingdistricts the ability to provide teacherTOM OOSTERHOUDTeditor&publisherraises of $2,500 or even $3,500 –depending on the plan each of the 67school districts (plus lab and charterschools) develop.Governor Rick Scott said, “I wantto thank the House and the Senatefor ensuring that we build on ourwork to implement performance pay, while also allowing school districtsthe flexibility to use the $480 millionin new funding to give every Floridateacher a pay raise. Our teachers aresome of the best in the nation andthey deserve to be rewarded for theirgreat work.”On yet another positive note,I would like to rave about ourcover story this week. Liz and ErinCzerwinski became the very firstKey West High School grads thatas twin sisters both earned gradepoint averages above 4.7. As a result, they were named Valedictorian andSalutatorian last weekend. Theseamazing two young ladies are alsobeautiful both inside and out. Andto top it all off, they were born viain vitro fertilization and were raisedby two proud gay moms, CarolineBauer and Sharon Czerwinski. Thegirls arrived in Key West at age 5,and started their scholastic careers atGerald Adams. Their moms have beentogether 25 years and tell us they couldnot be prouder of their Val and Salrecord-breaking twin daughters. Both the grads, Liz and Erin, andtheir moms, Caroline and Sharon, strongly affirm that much of thethanks for the girls’ success goes outto the caring and wonderfully diversecity of Key West. They also say thatthey could not have asked for a moreloving community. It is wonderfulto hear firsthand how diversity livesand thrives in this city of “one humanfamily”. Congrats go out to Liz andErin, as well as their impressiveparents, Caroline and Sharon. Youhave made us all very proud.conch color the florida keys 4 photographic chronicle

~ Cover Story ~Erin and LizFirst Twin Val and SalAmazing twin sisters Liz and ErinCzerwinski came to Key West withtheir parents at the age of 5 in 2000and started kindergarten here atGerald Adams School. Their parents,Caroline Bauer and Sharon Czerwinski, have been together for over 25years. Birth mom Sharon was able tohave the girls via intro insemination. At Conch Color’s request, these twobeautiful wiz kids have given us thefollowing introspective informationand answers to our questions:Liz (Salutatorian): I will be attendingFlorida State University intheir Honors Program this fall. I planto major in Advertising and Business.I have always given great effortand dedication to my academics. Myhigh grade point average is mostly areflection of my desire to challengemyself and put forth my best effortsin all of my assignments. Earning A’sin challenging courses is a matter ofhow willing you are to do your workand understanding that even littlegrades can help or hurt you.It is definitely an advantage to havemy twin for competition. Erin is themost organized and driven personI know, so she inspires me to reachhigh. I could never call it a disadvantagebecause I’m always proud of herwhether she succeeds more or lessthan me.I couldn’t have asked for a betterplace to grow up. Key West is agraciously friendly and supportivecommunity and I’ve had the bestexperiences at Key West High School. When I’m asked how it has beento be raised by two moms, it’s hardto say anything other than amazing. It has always felt normal to meand sometimes I even forget that it’ssomething unique. I feel very luckyto have had such supportive and lovingparents.I loved having the opportunityto grow up in such a beautiful place(Key West). It’s nice how the communityis so united and Key Westwill always feel like home. ThoughI’ll visit a lot, I don’t plan on movingback down to Key West after college.I hope to have internships and careeropportunities somewhere on theEastern Coast.Erin (Valedictorian): The secretto my GPA has been to just do myhomework when I’m supposed to,study for my tests, and get as muchas possible from class. It took a lot ofdedication and some weekend sacrifices, but it was worth it to me. Myadvice for younger students wouldbe to commit to school, or whicheveractivity they love, and then never losesight of their ultimate goal.I think it was advantageous competingwith my sister because we eachmotivated one another to keep doingour best. Also, if I needed help, Icould always ask her and vice versa. It’s definitely different being raisedby two moms, but the community ofKey West has always been supportive. We have a lot of loving people downhere that have made Liz and I feelvery comfortable. I wouldn’t wantto trade my family experience foranything.Key West is a great place to growup because everyone is so welcomingand laid back. I think the friendlyatmosphere has taught me muchabout being open to new ideas andto cultures. I don’t think I’ll comeback to permanently live in Key Westbecause I would really love to live upNorth in a bigger city, like Boston. Idefinitely plan on coming back tovisit, though!conch color the florida keys 17 photographic chronicleCamille’sRESTAURANTVisiting Nurse Association &Hospice of the Florida Keys
